I have been given 1000 Remington Large Rifle Primers. I only load for 44/40 Uberti 73 rifle and 12g Magtech brass with the Holy Black, would they be suitable for both ?

Thanks for any help.

Sorry Ned, but I don't believe they are suitable for either.  Both of those rounds use large pistol primers.  Perhaps you can trade them.

Howdy!

Ned, what Abilene said is generally true.  You MIGHT want to check, however.  I've been using Magtechs for about 6 years now.  I've shot them in both my shotguns, a Stoeger and an old Tula.  BOTH shotguns have enough headspace so they can successfully use Large Rifle primers with no problems because MY 100 hulls are cut just deep enough that EITHER LPPs OR LRPs will work.  Typically, while the diameter of either primer is roughly the same, the L Rifle primers are longer (deeper).  This will cause them to be slightly higher than flush with the base of the case - which is why I DOUBT the LRPs will work in your 44-40 (44WCF) cases.  Only the Magtechs and THEN only maybe.  Try a couple.

By the way, flush primers are generally considered to be a bit high, but will still work.  If I remember, TECHNICALLY a primer should be seated .004" lower than flush, but with primer pockets getting dirty with reloading, a tiny bit of variation will still function jes' fine.  And of course, mass manufacturing produces some variations itself.

Your easiest bet may be to trade them with another shooter for some other reloader as Abilene suggested.

Hey Paladin!  Howdy!

I had a VERY reputable gun dealer tell me HOW to re-load 22 LR rounds!  It IS possible - the Eskimos have been doing it for decades and HE did it as a young man (boy) during WWII when factory ammo was in short supply!  He also said it was a major pain in the ar$e! ;D ;D

Speaking of reloading rimfire ammo, if I were to load some it would be the .17s.  They are WAY overpriced.  Now, that would be a really dinky mold.  LEE could probably make 'em in a dozen cavities per mold. . . . ;D

Go ahead Dick, if you pull out all yer hair with that project I ain't gonna loan ya any of mine.  Some time if we meet in person asik me about the 22 Hornet cast bullet project I just have about finished up with.  Got put on the back burner a time or two for a while, but things worked out finally, just a bit of fine tuning yet.

No don't even ask why, all the tree rats in the world ain't worth the hair pulling I did over that one, although a custom mould might have been a better route, if you ever decide to make a 45 gr Big Lube 22 in 45 gr FNGC I'll be the first in line cause making a 55 gr FNGC work in a 1-16 twist Springfield Armory 22 LR barrel chambered in 22 Hornet is a fine line between to fast and not fast enough. ::) ;D

As for a 17,  I'll bring you basket weaving and finger paints if Nurse Rachet will let me. ;)
