Very nice Bob.   Caliber?  Maker?  Do you shoot Holy Black?   Details man...we need details.   :D

Its a business rifle in 45-70 made by Sharps Rifle Manufacturing Company, Hartford Connecticut.  I don't shoot it "anymore"

So, let me get this straight...that's an original Hartford Sharps?  Wow.  Given the condition, I have to believe it has been restored.   :o  Breathtaking!

Yes it has been restored by Doug Turnbull.  My Great grandfather bought it new in 1876.  It was stored in an attic from the 1930's until the 1950's where the exterior finish went completly bad.  The bore however was/is pristine.

Very nice and thanks for sharing.

Interesting is that it is a 45/70 in '76.

Really nice and how great that you have such a great piece of family history. Do you know the reason your grandfather purchased it, if it was because he was hanging around Ft. Griffin and wanted to make some money I think that would just about to much for us to take, jealousy would run rampant.

Also, I think if you put your ear next to the chamber of that rifle you will hear a slight whisper of "shoot me..., shoot me...". ;)

I got a 68 Sharps cartridge conversion carbine and could not wait to get it to the range, held my face as far away from the block as I could and touched it off - hey, it held together! I have probably put over 300 rounds thru it since, I don't shoot it allot but it is a treat to take to the range - keeps those black plastic gun guys in their proper place.
