I have read all of the postings on the board regarding replacing the factory rear sight with the Smith Enterprises rear sight.  While this is probably a great idea, it is kinda pricey.  Last time I looked, it was somewhere North of $125.  I may have stumbled upon another viable alternative....  Shiloh Sharps is known far and wide for being just about the best in the business.  Many would argue (myself among them) that the Shiloh Sharps is the greatest single shot rifle ever produced.  The rear sights on the Shiloh Sharps is a top-drawer piece of sighting equipment; well made and well designed.  To top all of that off, it is only $65, direct from Shiloh.  Guess what?  It uses a .499" dovetail!  What that translates to is that, with just a little of file work, you can use the Shiloh rear sight on a Spencer!  It is offered for round or octagon barrels.  As soon as my Spencer arrives, I will be sending some money to Big Timber, Montana!

The best thing that ever happened to my Spencer sight was when the "slide" fell off. Much better sight picture.  ;)

Given the configuration of the rear sight, it looks like a hole will need to be drilled and tapped for the spring retention screw.
