Just got my 44-40 Henry back from the engraver last Thursady.  It is the plum browned barrel military model that came from Cabelas back in 1997.  I used it as my CAS rifle for a couple years when I first got started; but retired it in 2003.  It'll get brought out of the gun safe more often now.  Jim Downing, The GunEngraver did the work.  I'd been wanting to get it engraved for a few years; but Jim was always backed up.  Still took over a year to get it done, and it was well worththe wait.

That looks very nice!!  Nice enough to deserve keeping it shiny rather than letting it age naturally.

It'll get used - with BPonly; but it'll also be kept clean & polished.

I am not a fan of engraving on most guns .But that kind of engraving on an 1860 Henry just goes together . Very nice gun ,Great work by the engraver and lucky you. I think I would have to let her age color,I like em looking old.   Dusty.

When I was just starting to collect back in the early '60's, when all sorts of good stuff wasn't just present - it was everywhere - the running joke was that 'He's got a rare Henry - it's not engraved...'

Everyone has his own tastes - but if it were mine, I'd shoot it and clean it, of course - but beyond wiping it down - I wouldn't polish it - I'd let it reach that mellow 'mustard' color, and that'd further enhance the deep lines.

Good lookin rifle.  You keep it polished, or letting it age?

I am kind of facing that issue now.  I like the way some of the older engrave original Henry rifles look with the nice patina on it.  I also like the polished look.  Right now I am using flitz on it and keeping it shiny but that may change.  I still plan on using mine for Civil War reenacting.  I fire more blanks through it that live ammo. I had it engraved because I wanted to have a "fancy" rifle to go through the 150th cycle of the Civil War reenatments coming up in the 3 years.

That work, to my eye, looks better than some of the originals. Congratulations.
