Howdy to the campfire. Like to ask for your advice regarding my recently received old 1972 (XX8) proof marked Remington 75 replica in .45 Colt. I found the following numbers on the pistol:
#73 underside of the butt, next to Uberti emblem, see pic
#174 on frontside of cylinder as well on lower left portion of grip frame covered by left grip panel.
Which one is the serial number: 73 or 174?

Usually - the frame has the serial number.

Any other numbers are assembly numbers from the guy who put it together, to ensure that all associated parts remained with the piece during final finishing.

As St. George said, the serial number is on the receiver frame, that is the only serial number recognized as legal, and the only part of the gun that has to be delivered through an FFL.  No matter how many numbers are on the cylinder, (removable) gripframe, triggerguard, etc, they are not parts that must be registered as a firearm.  The Serial number on an Uberti SAA Colt type is on the bottom of the frame, visible in front of the triggerguard.

Since an 1875 Remington has a one piece frame with the gripframe integral, the serial number is the one on the bottom of the gripframe, in your case the number is 73.  That gun is about as old as an Italian replica Remington gets..
