knucklehead

first i shoot black powder in my 66.

my 66 is a 45lc and has the short strock kit installed and action job done to it.

I am using mag tech large pistol and winchester large pistol primers.
each set of 10 shots yesterday i was getting at least 1 round that would not fire the first time the hammer fell on it.
i had to recock and then the round would go off.
i have been turning the screw under the lever on the rifle to the right about a 1/8" of a turn. but this is not helping.

the rifle has had less than 1000 rounds shot threw it so i dont think the firing pin is bad.
any suggestions as to what i can look at to fix this problem.

thanks in advance.

Fer knucklehead,

You say.............

Quotemy 66 is a 45lc and has the short strock kit installed and action job done to it.

Did it shoot OK BEFORE ??

Did a Gunsmith install the SSK and do the action job?? and did he test  it after ??

What primers are you using(??)......CCI are hardest to touch off and Winchester and Federals are about the easiest.

Don't feel alone....I've seen lots of SS and "action-tuned" rifles say "no" to go right after the owner gets em home. If changing primers don't help, the mainspring may need a bit of stiffening.

Try switching to Federal primers if you can find them.  Winchesters are a harder primer and from my experience not as trust worthy anyway.

The 66 doesn't have a mainspring tension screw like a 73.  If you can turn the mainspring screw, it is loose.  Tighten it and your misfires will probably go away.  If someone did an action job and part of the action job was leaving the mainspring screw loose in order to reduce tension, they did a bad job.  Only way to do it is to grind and polish the spring so it is right when the retaining screw is tight.

What  Pettifogger says is right!!  :D

QuoteOnly way to do it is to grind and polish the spring so it is right when the retaining screw is tight.

Main thing ta remember is that ya dont wanna get the spring Too Hot!!   :o as it will change its structure, soooo.. Grind fer 2 secs, dip in water, then repeat, takes a bit longer but ya wont bugger the spring!! :'(
