DJ, AJ, interesting discussion.

We know that  b.p. will bump up an undersized bullet, whereas smokeless will not (at least in my testing).  The only way I think that can happen as that the b.p. must give an immediate punch to the bullet, with the back end compressing before the front has a chance to move very much.   The Fox Creek Kid mentioned that in Dr. Mann's testing, with BP, the base of the bullet obturates completely BEFORE the bullet even leaves the cartridge case.

DJ, in your chart, please note that the b.p. reached 2,000 in 1/4 the time and 3,000 in 1/2 the time that smokleless did. That may just be enough to obturate an undersized bullet,  as in the Dr. Mann tests.

Hopefully, later on this year or by spring 2008, I will have been able to produce charts between b.p. and various smokeless propellants in the same pressure range.
