1866 rifle stock - replacing

I am looking to replace the stock/buttplate on my Uberti 1866 Rifle.  The crescent is just too small and pointy.

Does anyone know if the carbine stock (Say, from VTI) will fit on the rifle? 

Does anyone know of someone who produces custom stocks for these weapons?

I've often thought about changing one myself. Near as I can tell, the carbine stock will fit as long as you have the straight stock on your rifle, now.

I don't know, Al, but I've shot both and I don't notice much difference other than the carbine is easier to put to my shoulder because of the flatter butt. The thing to do is find someone with a '66 or '73 carbine and lay them side-by-side. I'm currently shooting a carbine and the length is just fine.

I'm pretty sure that they willwork.I have one 66 carbine and a couple of straight stock rifles. I prefer the crescent configuration. If you decide to go ahead with this I would be willing to swap you straight up. If you agree to this, send me an email with your shipping address. Dixie...sells a replacement...I have no idea the cost, but they are American Walnut....so you would need to get the forearm to match.

Each stock is hand fitted to eack gun. There are minute differences. I have replaced an Uberti '66 carbine buttstock with one bought from Uberti and it was not a hairline fit. I had to sand and inlet. Bear that in mind. It is not a "drop in" part unless you are lucky.

I must be lucky then...Goody sent me his carbine stock and it fit pretty good...

BTW - the pull length is the same on both.
