Im only just getting started in this Cowboy fun!!! I can see to keep the cost down I'm going to have reload! Bought a Lee pro 1000. Not the best I know but it will do for this beginer! Any suggestions on using this one to reload, or just some suggestions in general. And I already have heard about how I shoulda got a Dillon. Maybe later!
Thanks Yawl!!

First thang ya need ta go along with that new press of your'n is a few reloading manuals. I'd suggest one of 'em oughtta be the Lyman cast boolit handbooj 'cause yer gonna need it sooner er later. The Lyman book has a really good how-to approach to reloadin ('course my copy's nearly 30 years old....)

I started with a RCBS Rock Chucker (long before Cowboy), then went to a Lee Load Master (don't waste yer money!) 'n' now got a Dillon 650. The only purchase I ever regretted waz the Lee  :P

And keep the primer trough full (not the try, but the thing that the primers slide down).  Without the weight of the primers pressing down, they won't feed well.

Other than that, make sure to spend the time to set everything up exactly right.  That will save big headaches.

Get a quality scale!  And use it.  Also, dial calipers.

Read the book that was mentioned above by the Canuck :o

Once ya get goin, it'll run fine.  I had a Pro 1000 for several 10's of thousands of rounds.  I upgraded to a Dillon when my ammo requirements outgrew the speed of the press.

I have a Lee loader and because I have a house full of family, my loading bench is my escape.  I don't mind it being a little slow, but I would never go back to priming shells with the Lee system.  I prime all my cases off line with a hand primer.  I have NEVER had a high primer problem and it gives me another chance to look over the cases.
I will have a 650 one day, but just be happy with what you have.  Check your powder drop about every ten loads.  Wear safety glasses and keep any powder away from the loader.

As said above. Also, take your time when loading. You will learn to speed up as you gain more experience. I usually check every 10th round to make sure everything is in its right place. ;D

Take the primer slide (the curved black plastic thing) out of the press and take it apart.  Get some dry graphite lube and a couple of q-tips.  Load up the q-tip with the lube and rub the powder into the part where the primers slide through.  Work the lube into the plastic as much as you can.  Tap out the excess and reassemble.  This will make the primers slide through a little easier.  Next, don't use Winchester primers.  The old style with the nickel plating worked, the new brass looking ones don't.  I switched to Remington primers and had no problems.

Also, get real familiar with how to take the auto-index mechanism apart and reassemble and adjust it.  Once or twice a year (depending on how many rounds you load) take it apart, clean it, and lube it VERY lightly.  Bits of powder and dust get into the mechanism and cause occasional problems.  A little preventive maintenance goes a long way.

Next, invest in both the case and lead feeders.  They are well worth the money.

Last, take it slow at first.  Get used to the process and enjoy shooting ammo that you've loaded yourself.
