Well,

So when I was in Nebraska last weekend, I got the opportunity to see the new GAF Hat badge and was quite impressed with the workmanship.  So, I talked to the manufacturer and asked him some questions about making a new medal based on a couple of existing Military awards.  The manufacture said he could do it.  So, The Order of the Iron Trooper will be given a face lift.  He has agreed to make one a year for us.  I will say am holding most information close to the vest for now, but will say that the Iron Trooper is a medal worn around the neck and made out of Sterling Silver.  It will be by far the nicest award given in all of Cowboy Action Shooting.  Also the most valuable.  About $100 to make...

What is that?  What did you say?  What IS the Iron Trooper?  You mean you don't know?  The Order of the Iron Trooper is only awarded once a year.  The GAF Member that EARNS it will be the GAF Member that WINS 1st Place overall at the Grand Army of the Frontier's National Championship.  That means, if you win your catagory, you still get a First place medal.  If you win the match OVERALL, YOU are the Iron Trooper.  Many will enter, some will win, but only ONE can be awarded the Order of the Iron Trooper.

Iron Troopers of the past:

2004: Colonel Diamond
2005: Shootn Newton
2006: Some guy that I don't want to talk about
2007: You?  http://www.grandarmyofthefrontier.org/  Click on "Dispatches"

The Iron Trooper is the most difficult award to win in all of CAS.  The courses of fire are more difficult and physically demanding.  The shooter is challanged mentally and physically while shooting historical military engagements of the 19th and early 20th Century.

Major Matt,
Any chance you will be back to defend that Iron Trooper?

There's alway's a chance, but honestly this year does not look like good timing with a multi-millon dollar project that is the focus of my career right now.  Things could slip, but if they do, I won't be doing my job ;)

I think there is something special cooking for 2008 though....
