Actually I have a feeling that  some of the girls swapped bonnets for hats with a some  of the boys as a prank.  For instance the one standing in the boat near the stern looks like a boy.  A girl wouldn't have her blouse open that far and if it's a girl she's a late bloomer  ;)  Also the 2 near the bow.  One on the bank with their arm on the shoulder of the other.  These would be some pretty hard looking girls and none of them appear to have bosoms. ;D

Young folks on what was most likely a summer Sunday afternoon cutting up for the camera, change the clothing a bit and it could be today.  Do notice 3 differeant variations of the Cattleman Crease in hat crowns.

Do we have a date for this picture?  What do you suppose was going on?

Looks as if several families drove their buggies down to the river and then took a boat across to a sand bar to take a picture ???  Wonder what the occasion was??

Summertime at the S.D. Butcher farm near Gates, Custer County, Nebraska.

1899

The photograph was taken at the artificial lakes on the S.D. Butcher farm near Gates bridge on the north side of the Middle Loup river. These lakes formed from the Butcher & Griebel irrigation ditch.

Yeah I've seen a few in photos, I forgot about the one in PI.  That is another one of those, "they didn't do that back then" I hear about from time to time.  So many of the things folks post and tell me fit in the, "When the legand becomes fact, print the legand." ;)
