wondering will the 73 colt 45 long colt replica.   fit in my Ruger Vaquero 44 mag holster, same size wise ?..I have a brother 800 miles away that wants a holster from me.

Yer Vaquero 44 Mag is bigger than a Colt clone. So, it will fit but might be a little loose. I wouldn't put the Colt clone in the holster and turn it upside down unless the thong is on the hammer.  :o

I better find a pattern somewhere.

Marshal Will Wingam

Will Gormley has pattern sets that fit almost all. Pick the style you like and the set comes with patterns for all the common cowboy guns.

OK, I found one in some stuff I had....do you guys find that following the patterns exactly works best, I dont know if they tend to be smaller or larger...I like the vaquero one I made, kinda tight, then when molded it fit perfect. I found one pattern that says 45 colt frontier model, I take it thats the 73 model.

I usually make my patterns a slight bit tighter so I can mold them to be snug. It's easier, though, to mold a holster that is a little looser. That's personal preference. I suspect that the pattern you have is for the '73.

If all else is equal with the pattern, lighter leather gives a looser fit and the Ghormley patterns recommend 8/9oz, I think.  I like to use a bit heavier leathers and fillers, even in 'old time' type patterns.  This is usually going to require a bit closer fitted patterns than the old orriginals used.  Commercial patterens are a great starting point but work with them to make them your own.  I have not tried it yet but Ghormley does have a new pattern out for a more modern design, one size fits all holster.  I do not remember the name off hand but it is a part of a Buskaderro pattern pack.
