What kind of loads is everyone using in their OT's and RM's? I am trying to decide whether I want a RM 1851 38 Colt/Special or an 1872 OT Navy in 44 Colt/Russian. I am curious what kind of powder loads are being used in say 38 Colt or Special and 44 Colt or Russian in these wheelguns. I know there are a number of other factors in loading cost but the charge size does matter. Is it like 38 to 44-40 or 45 Colt where the charge is half the size or is the difference less obvious when using the smaller Russian case?
Thanks in advance,
Mild Myles

.44 Colt - Lee 1.6 cc dipper of FFg or FFFg. .44 Russian - Lee 1.3 cc dipper of FFg or FFFg. Both topped by a 200. gr. bullet lubed with suitable BP lubricant.

I did load some 38s with Pyrodex for my converted 51's, but that was with the 148gr HBWC bullet for the 36 cal .375 bore.  I think about 15 gr.  Haven't loaded bp for a true 38 Special, so can't comment on that.

The 44Russian is happy with about 18 gr of black powder, a good load, smokey, lots of fire and noise, but light recoil.  Much closer to a 38's powder charge than either the 44 Colt or 44 Special would take.  I prefer it to the longer cases as you don't need a filler or wad to reduce the charge, it's already reduced.

I fill a 38spl about 3/16" from the top with 3F BP and them squish in a bullet from this fellow: http://www.whyteleatherworks.com/.  They will run all day in my 72 OT and RMs should be about the same.  Real pleasant to shoot, cost effective and lots of smoke,,

I haven't loaded for 38 special yet, but I load 38 long colt with a 158 grain snake bite bullet and 17 grains of swiss 3f.  The swiss is a bit hotter than regular black powder and gives more of a punch with the shorter case.  Just a guess, but I'd probably use around 20 grains with 38 special.

for 44 colt I use 24 grains of Graf's 3f and a 200 grain mav dutchman bullet.  I can stuff 28 in the case, but 24 is pretty close to the 44 henry flat and I dont' want to stress my guns or my hands.

Haven't chronoed eigther one yet, plan to when I get home and a budy and I get together.  He's got the chrono.

I use 28 Grns Elephant FFFg and a 248 grn 44 Rem heeled bullet in my 44 Remy and it is very accurate. I can also load about 30 grns in a 44 Mag case with the same bullet in my original Remy Conversions and it sjhoots real well too. I'll be buying some Graf's soon as I'm almost out of Elephant BP. less than one can to go.
I loaded the 38' Spcl to about 1/4 inch from the top and used HBWC and that compressed the FFFG real nice and they were/are accurate at CAS ranges.

I use 18.5 grains of GOEX 3F in .38 SPL cases and the RCBS 140 CM bullet in '51 RM's & an 1966.

In .44's (both WCF & Extra Long)  abot 33 to 35 grains fit right in.
