Howdy Folks,
For those interested, I found a 1881 Marlin at the Stockton Gun Exchange here in Stockton, Ca. (209)473-7682. It is not marked on the barrel, but is being sold as a .45-70. It has an octagon barrel that looked to be 24". The bore looked good, and the action is smooth, with a price of $850. I spotted it in the rack with a bunch of Rossis, Marlins, and Winchesters. The barrel is faded blue, but the action has a black finish. The only true wart is the rear sight, a modern William's sight that would be at home on a Remington Model 700. If you are in Central California you might want to go by and take a look. Talk to Gary or Mike (the store owners). They are both honest men, and will give you square info, and deal. Good luck.
Adios,
