I am curious if anyone has any experience with the L. Romano Rifle company,  makers of Spencers.  The prices seem quite high especially compared to Armi sport.  If anyone has bought this product, please post your experiences with the company and the product.http://www.romanorifle.com/html/spencer.html

Hi,

It is my understanding the quite a few members of N-SSA own and shoot the Romano Spencer.  You might post your question over at their web site   http://www.n-ssa.net/phpbb/viewforum.php?f=4 .

You might also consider doing a search on the N-SSA web site, just type in Romano Spencer, and also do a similar search on the Spencer Shooting Society discussion forum.

Also, Romano may not be making the Spencer 56-50 any longer, but you should check their web site for that information.  You might be better off just calling them by phone.

Ok well thank you for the information.  Seems the question was a bit too open ended for this board.

   Greetings!

DeadEye... If you want The Best, Romano is the only way to go. Several years ago, I had Larry Romano make me an 1860 Spencer Carbine; it's a Work of Art, both in form and function. They're hand fit and finished; you can't do better.
The new imported 1865 Spencers are great arms, and if you plan on rolling around in the gravel, or if you just can't justify the cost, they work well.

   Be Well!

More like a bit too rich for most of us. Five grand is a lot of money. As they say, if you gotta ask the price, you can't afford it.

Larry Romano is now relining and rechambering  Taylor 56/50 Spencer carbine barrels with the same type barrel [1/36 ] he buts on his high dollar custom Spencers. He did mine and it works great ,40 gr of 3F and his bullet mould using hard lead. It shot real clean, hardly any clean up after firing 30 rds. He also modifyed my rear sight by adding a peep sight, this is the same sight he uses on his personal Spencer when shooting N-SSA competition. I am not sure what he going to charge because we did a cash trade kind of deal. You can reach Larry at his shop at 315-695-2066, tell him Ken from Chattahoochee refered you [this might be worth a big discount when I place my next order], also tell him I said, "he would give you the SPECIAL SSS PRICE". ----Ken/Red Leg

Hi Red Leg,

Just curious about something you mentioned in your previous post.  You stated that He (Romano) also modifyed my rear sight by adding a peep sight.  By adding a peep sight, doesn't this make shooting the Spencer illegal in competition at N-SSA?  Just wondering, and I would appreciate it if you would clarify your comment.

Thanks,

Two Flints-- You may modify an original type rear sight by adding a peep, or adding a taller front sight blade to an original  sight  base . Ken

Two Flints:  When skirmishers say they put a peep sight on an N-SSA approved weapon, that means they drilled a hole in the existing rear sight leaf or slider. You can also replace it with one of the same size, composition and configuration to eliminate the notch. They may be only slightly taller but must appear to be the same style and appearance as what comes on the "original" weapon with the exception of the peep sight hole. While purists might take exception to this as non-authentic, it makes it possible for older shooters to continue shooting for years after they have difficuly seeing notched rear sights. You can accomplish a similiar effect by using a Merit sight on your shooting glasses.   Hoot - 3rd Ga   N-SSA

   Greetings!

That is precisely my problem: I can't hit anything with my long guns unless the target's at "biting distance", or I'm using a peep sight. Somehow, I do well with the handguns...
So! I've decided to get a Merit eyeglass attatchment, but where do we get an extra sight slide for the Taylors Spencer? Will Taylors or Cimarron supply these?

   Thanks & Be Well!

MT Marfield,

Try this link  http://www.eabco.com/css_sts2.html  or this one

or just do another Google search with these search words  "merit eyeglass sight attachment"

There is an economical way to make your own peep from an existing slider. Try silver soldering a very, very thin rectangular piece of metal over the rear surface of the slider. Then drill a peep sight hole through the whole thing. Don't get the slider too hot or it will try to curl up.
A "peep sight" slider is a common thing among N-SSA sutlers like Lodgewood or S&S Firearms.  Hoot

   Greetings!

Thanks for the tips, Guys! I think that I'll try both avenues: peep slide, and the eyeglass -mounted diopter.
The Midway #30 has a Lyman Hawkeye Diopter on Pg. 102 for $18.99... Anyone have any experience with that?

   Thanks Again & Be Well!

   Greetings!

That's a very good price; actually, that is about $200 less than the $2700 advertised in 1998. If that L.Romano is in great shape, and you want a beautifully made Spencer Carbine, investigate!!

   Be Well!
