:-\Who makes the better '58 Army, Pietta or Uberti ?

Marshal Will Wingam

I voted for Uberti because all mine are made by them and I've had no problems with them. I understand that now the Piettas are as good, but I still stay with Uberti because all the parts are interchangable and if I need a spare spring, I can take one out of any pistol and replace it with a new one at my convenience.

I voted Uberti and have owned both makes. I no longer own the 3 Piettas. Admittedly, the Piettas were of older manufacture before the quality upgrade. A big attraction for me to the Ubertis is their FUNCTIONAL mainspring tension screw to lighten the mainspring without habing to replace them or grind them down. So far I have not seen a functional adjustment screw in either the Pietta or Euroarms Remingtons. It would be so simple to just put in a longer screw but they don't. I also like the lighter weight of the Ubertis which makes them more pointable for me.

I prefer the feeling of the Pietta, but the quality of Uberti.  I have both and the pietta fits my hand better, but have softer internals.

I have both and prefer the Pietta its the largest frame and fits my hands better and its a plus the spare parts are cheaper includeing spare cylinders.

All Uberti 1858s sold by Taylor's have forged frames, rather than the cast framse -of Pietta or earlier Ubertis.  Mine is forged and superbly accurated and smooth.  I vote Uberti

TL,....just wondering,..in what specific way are the newer forged frames better  than the cast ones?  Strength?  Would like to know what to look for that might not be up to par in my older Ubertis & ASPs.  You may not know for sure, but just thought I'd ask to learn something new....thanks. :)

I have a pair of Uberti '58 Remingtons and love them.  Have had no problems with them since i got them.  I thought the actions were smoother than the Piettas when I bought them.  At one time Sportsman's Warehouse sold both side by side.  They may still for all I know.  So I was able to compare them side by side and like I said I thought the action was smoother on the Ubertis.  So I went with them.

My $.02 worth and that ain't worth much.

I think it was so they would only produce one 1858 receiver, as I believe switching to the forged frames was in preparation for their 45 Colt gated conversion 1858s they have now released, and possibly to the proliferation of the R&D and Kirst cylinders.  The original investment cast frames were only designed for BP shooting.

I do know that forged GI M1 carbine and M1 Garand receivers are supposed to be far superior and stronger than the cast IMI (Kahr Arms) Carbine receivers, and Asian M1 and M14 receivers that came out some years ago.

Thanks TL,...yes, that explains it.    :)

I know I love my gated conversion so much that I could wet myself like a happy puppy every time I shoot it!  It's even cooler than the Colt R-Ms, and that is saying alot.  They are perfect for a slowpoke like me that shoots either a Henry or 56-50 Spencer as a main match rifle!

I heard Pietta used cnc machines to produce thier 1858's From a orginal Remmington revolver, while Uberti used the wax castings which produced a smaller than orginal gun on account of shrinking in the mold.
If Uberti has switched to forged frames recently , is thier new guns bigger than the older ones?

The reason I don't think Pietta used original dimensions is because their guns have far more "beef" around the barrel where it screws into the frame. Every time I look at an original Remington the finer frame looks more like a euroarms or Uberti than a Pietta. There is a pretty big step down from the frame to the barrel on the Piettas compared to the originals, Euros & Ubertis. As for original grip shape, I have no clue all 3 repros are different with the Euro being the smallest.

I've never handled or shot a Uberti.  So I'm prejediced to the Pietta as I've shot them and they are great.  I bought one on sale so I could try out single action black powder shooting.  It was the moothest handling / easiest pointing pistol I'd ever had in my hand.  Bought another recently that was listed as having an action job.  Just as slick and nice as the first one which was just as slick and smooth as the one with the action job.  Got myself spare cylinders from Cabelas when they were only $ 28 each.  So I'm happy, . . .  :)
Beware the man with one gun, he probably knows how to use it.
