My company is about to lay-off 5000 employees.  If I survive the lay-off, I will be getting one of these....

Major Matt,

I hope the lay offs miss you when they come around.  Looks like a fine rifle I am sure you will enjoy it when and if you get it.

Are you planning on going for an original or a Pedersoli?

I think a Pedrosoli would probably fit me better.  Meaning I would be hesitant to shoot the real one.

Skip,

Thanks for the thought.  I will keep it in mind.

I agree. I have one of each (Pedersoli, and original, both rifles) I bought the Pedersoli so that I wouldn't have to worry about hurting the original.
Not that it precludes the Pedersoli from performing the tasks tht you want it to, but they aren't faithfull reproductions of the original. The internal workings of the lock are different and some of the lines are different. I'm not trying to talk you out of the Pedersoli, because it IS a very good gun, but I do want to make you aware of the differences.

About two years ago I bought a Pedersoli from Tuolome Lawman after he had used it for a review for the Cowboy Chronicle.  I'd be willing to let it go for what I paid for it since I've never shot it (got it right after I messed up my shoulder and the idea of shooting a .45-70 was not appealing at the time).  Since then I found me a Sharps carbine in .50-70 that is more to my liking and interests.

Nothing wrong with it as far as I can know, I've just not as interested in having a trapdoor as I once was.

   Greetings!

I landed a Pedersoli '73 Trap-Door Carbine back in '99 or '00 when I was still working in the Gun Shop. It shoots well, and recoil isn't an issue with ".45-55-405" BP handloads. I've also had a hoot shooting 3-Ball Guard Ctgs out of it... Phone books at 40 yds. were easily punched hard with a tight pattern from the 3-Ball Guard Ctg!
Assuming that you will reload for it, I HIGHLY recommend that you get a copy of "Loading Cartridges for the Original .45-70 Springfield Rifle and Carbine" by J.S. & Pat Wolf. This book is for everyone that shoots an Original or Replica TD: it tells you HOW and with WHICH components to exactly duplicate the original government & early commercial cartridges. It will tell you how to assemble all of the adopted Service Ctgs, the Guard Ctg, and the Foraging ShotShell. I can't recommend this book enough! Do a search for Wolfs Western Traders, I think that they're in their third edition.

   Be Well!

P.S. ~ Best of Luck on the Job Situation... I have similar concerns, as well.
