Friend of mine seen two references to " smokeless blackpowder" in two different magazines within the last month. I did that Google thing and can't fine any info on it. Figured it's time to come to the real experts. Anybody got any dope on the stuff?

Duplex loads smoke less.  Also, some subs smoke less when loaded down enuf.  Genuine black Powder smokes just fine when it fills the case and is compressed under the bullet.

Were these in reference to muzzel loading rifles?

I'm pretty sure my head hurts.    "Smokeless Blackpowder?"    Never heard of such an animal.

Now, some of the subs might not  smoke quite as much as the real McCoy, but evr' one I ever saw used smoked just fine.  And, if ya use Alliant's Unique, you can get nearly as much smoke as BP on a bad day.  (Bad day for BP = Dry, windy, small charge with very little or no compression)

Besides, unless yer gonna be in a gunfight ambush, I can see NO advantage to BP whut don' smoke!  No!  A CAS shoot does NOT qualify as a good reason for no-smoke BP.  Iffn ya wanna shoot powder whut don' smoke jes use smokeyless powder an' quit tryin' ta cheat an' win over all the other BP competitors !!!

Yer mileage may vary

What that tank man said.  Us CAS shooters want the smoke.  If not, we get some piff ting pinko wussy ammo and shoot with the race, go fast, run around and buy a belt buckle crowd. ;D

jwinks,

As DD indicated, perhaps the reference was to duplex loading.  Or perhaps, today's current b.p. subs, but they do not contain any amount of smokeless powder.

The only other possibility that I know of is what was known as "semi-smokeless" powder.
The old DuPont's "Lesmok" and King's "Semi-Smokeless" powders are two examples of this powder type.

Both were designed to be loaded in bulk, the same as b.p. and would allow for continued accurate shooting due to the 20% nitrated wood cellulose (also used in early smokeless powders) they contained.

I have shot a little of the King's "Semi-Smokeless" in the .44-40 (Older PETERS .44-40 Semi-Smokeless cartridges) and they worked very well. I noted that they produced  some smoke, though not as much as straight b.p. cartridges.

You don't suppose the reference was to the new Savage? muzzleloader that is rated for jacketed bullets and smokeless powders?

Hey there W44CF, that's exactley the type info I was looking for. My buddy claims sthat the stuff was loaded back just after the turn of the century. I am sure they weren't talking about duplexing back then. Anyways, thanks a ton.

Dr. Bob

I have to agree with Frenchie,  DD said a whole mouthful there.  Just a great way to express those thoughts!!  Dang, wish I was smart enough to have said that!! :o :o ;D ;D
