Okay....................

I have used the same gun cabinet for `bout 20 yrs, but yesterday I picked up me  ASM 1873 and there it wuz.................... :o :o :o

:o :o RUST!!! :o :o
Now I aint never had rust on any of my firearms before `n I aint `bout ta let it start!!
I think the reason is, that I do not use this part (attic) of the house as much as I used to `cos I got me a new play pen downstairs so`s I do most stuff in that room,

I reckon that the air got a bit stale n moist, specially as weve had our wettest Nov/Dec in years, and that could have contributed to the problem

Sooooooooo

Bottom line...

What do you do to stop/prevent rust attacking yer beloved guns!!
I always make sure they are clean and wiped with an oily rag before I put them ta bed.

I cant use anything electrical to keep the cabinet..warm n cosy! (Too much Holy Black in the area!!) so what do you pards do when ya aint usin a smokepole fer a while, ::)

Howdy PUK,

I love Ballistol and use it for lots of stuff.  But, for real rust protection I've found something better.  It was specified by Boeing Aircraft for use where they really needed a good rust preventative.  It's labeled Boeshield T9.  I doubt that Boeing actually manufactures the stuff, but they have their name on it and it works.  I've tried lots of stuff, but this beats 'em all, especially WD-40.  FWIW, the WD in WD-40 stands for water displacement.  It does that well, but as for forming a rust preventative coating, Boeshield T9 is one century better.

No, I don't sell the stuff, but it's not that hard to find. Let me know if you can find it in the UK.  If not, I'll send some with your next mold order. . . . .  You need the EPP-UG in yer ROAs. . .

I just check mine perodically and keep them cleaned wether they need it or not, wiping down with a coat of oil on a clean rag.

WD-40 is great, but if left for a long period, it drys on your weapon forming a thin yellowish coat that resembles plastic, and is damned hard to remove without messing up the finish of your weapon.

Believe it or not, I've used Vasceline or any other Patroleum Jelly to displace moisture when my guns are stored for any period of time, and it works great. Hell to clean off, but still, it's done a great job protecting my firearms !!

I keep a couple of bags of silica gel in my cabinet, and prior to putting them away wipe with an oily rag.  No rust so far the room is central heated though and no dampness present.
I heard somewhere that wiping over with olive oil is a good rust preventer.
Can you get BALLISTOL in the UK?

Dr. Bob

Howdy Paladin UK,

I am using a 25 year old can of RIG [Rust Inhibiting Grease] which my ole daddy used for as long as I can remember - early 1950's at least.  [I about 8-10 then! :)]  It is pretty similar to Vaseline, but a little thicker.  Don't like WD-40. :(  Guess I just old fashioned.  Do like Ballistol! :)

A lot of people use a thing called a Goldenrod.  It's a rod about 3/4" in diameter and a foot or foot and one-half long that is a low temperature heater.  You put it in your safe and it warms the air just enough to keep the moisture out of the safe.

For my black powder guns Olive oil ..fer my smokeless guns wd40 ....It `s humid here all the time , good rust protection is a must ...never have a rusting problem unless i leave one in the shop over night with out the oils . You wouldn`t beleive the rusted mess i can have over night in the shop on an unprotected gun ...Other oils are better , but sometimes other oils are harder to come by . If i`m not going to shoot one for a month or more ..i always run an oil patch at least once a month through the bores and wipe the exterior finish with an oil rag.  :)

I read an article and saw some pics in the Varmint Hunter mag where this fella compared all kinds of supposed rust preventitives and came to the conclusion that Neetsfoot Oil out protects them all. Seems he took nails, coated them with different stuff and then laid them on a piece of metal and wet the whole mess down. Some of the highly touted ones failed to protect overnight.

One thing I tryed to keep the inside of barrels dry, is to stick wads of cotton in them from either end. Cotton is great at keeping moisture out of the inside of shotgun barrels, and works damned fine on my Colt C & B's when they're not being used. Of corse, that's after cleaning and oiling them real good !

I haven't had a problem with the insides of barrels rusting yet, and some of the time, I have one or two of my Colt's C & B's that I leave out, laying on my dresser, for weeks on end.

Just an added thought to consider !!

Howdy an' Merry Christmas to all!

I'm speakin' from about 1978 on regarding lots of different oils an' preservatives used on lots of different guns, most of which were being handled daily and either kept holstered 'til firing (which could be done in temp extremes from 117 deg. F. to - 69 deg. F. outside temp. - in other words; lots of varience) or simply left outside either in mounts or lying loosly on top of my tank.  OK - I don't claim to be a reseacher or expert, just an old Army tank Commander & Master Gunner with LOTS of varience in places and temp extremes.

For what is EASIEST to find, (not necessarilly Best, just easiest) I've found that hands down BreakFree works best.  Lube - oil - preserve - all.  (Notice I DIDN'T say Clean - which is the C in BreakFree CLP) there are better cleaners, but it'll work OK in a pinch. No, I don't work for or sell BF, but I know what has worked best FOR ME  all 'round.

Your mileage may vary.

The next question;  Paladin, is there BF in the UK that's easy to find?

I have a GoldenRod in my cabinet, but a 60 to 75 watt light bulb left lit in the cabinet (should be placed near the bottom, so protection should be made) works nearly as well.

Again - y'all may have different opinions, but Merry Christmas to all!

I'll second the recommendation of Break-Free CLP. A light coating works well and the excess is easily removed before use.

That Lanotech sounds interesting.  Even  tho you know my opinion, any opinion like I expressed is only worth a few grains of salt if you've actually used a bunch of products (not one or two) and can actually look out for different things.

By the way, ANY liquid lube or grease, for that matter, aint worth a hill'o'beans in the dusty conditions of - let's say; Iraq!.  OH YEAH!  It worked grand - right up to the time we moved and manuvered!!!  There went the machine guns!  I was only able to coax 9 rounds out of my M2 HB .cal 50!  About 30 rounds from my gunner's M240 (7.62 NATO) and 4 (if I remember right) from the loader's M240.  It wasn't until the War was finished and we had returned back to Ft. Riley ("I think we're back in Kansas, Toto!") that I found out about some of the newest lubes which go on, then turn to dry.

Which is why I'm gonna look into that Lanotech!

Hope y'all had a wonderful and blessed Christmas!  ((For the last 12 minutes there is left of it!))

5 min. later:

Rats!  Apparently, America has no distributors of Lanotech.  At least none in their Post Code (same as our Zip Code) database.

Lanotec Australia has shut down for the Christmas break and will re-open again on 08JAN07. I'll give'em a bell and enquire about a US distributor.  8)

Thanks, mate!

I did Lanotech's Postal Code search thing, but it seems to be Australia oriented. (I wonder why?)( ;) )

Hope y'all down there had a great Christmas AND Boxing Day.  I may be one of the few in USA who have heard of/know about Boxing Day.  Most of my fellow Americans just give us a "deer in the headlights" look when my wife (from Scotland) or I mention "Boxing Day."  Tee-hee !
