I need to know a shop where I can send the brass trigger guards of my 1860 Army's to get them silver plated like the Colt repros.

St. George

Very few of the period Colt Model 1860's featured silver plating.

The backstrap was iron and finished in Blue - and the triggerguard was brass - polished and varnished.

The plated repros are from the 'Signature Series'.

Many jewelry repair shops can plate - so look first for one of them - but most of that variety of plating is relatively thin, so be certain to tell them to triple-plate.

They'll be helpful - and they may be far less expensive than a 'smith.

Good Luck.

The one thing about real silver plating is that sulfur tarnishes silver quickly.  It would seem BP residue would turn it black quickly.

Cincinnati Slim

Howdy Y'all,

I have had a couple of Remmie triggerguards and a 1860 Colt front and backstrap nickle plated.

Just look up a shop that does chrome plate jobs on bumpers and bike parts. Here in Cincinnati I go to D&G Custom Chrome.

Tell 'em nickel only and not to lay it on too thick. These folks are used to doing heavy durable triple chrome bumper plate jobs.

The price was really good ($10 a part !!! ;D) and the result is great !

Jewelry plate is not gonna hold up very well w/ body oils and black powder.

I wouldn't use 'em for close tollerance items like barrels or cylinders but for triggerguards and grip frames they are fine.

The plating adds some thickness, I had to grind off a little of the hidden rear/backside of the Remmie triggerguards to get 'em to fit but it is really TOUGH ! Powder crud DOES NOT STICK AT ALL. Cleans up like a new teflon skillet.

Check out my pix from my "Nice day shootin'at Friendship" post to have a look-see !

Happy Trails,

Slim
