Serial number means little on those. Remington made them in batches, starting wherever they pleased on SN's, even starting over several times. The range can be narrowed down to major types, though.

Early Type 1 - No extractor, marked "E". Remington & Sons, Ilion, N.Y." on one side and "Elliot's Patent Dec. 12,1865" on the other side of barrel rib. Only a few hundred made in 1866

Type 1 Mid - As above, with extractor. Late 1860's.

Type 1 Late - Automatic extractor and marked on top of barrel rib. 1860s to 1888.

Type 2 - Marked "Remington Arms Co., Ilion, N.Y." on the barrel rib. 1888 to 1911

Type 3 - Marked "Remington Arms - U.M.C. Co., Ilion, N.Y." on the barrel rib. 1912-1935

Goody,
Thanks for the information from your discription It is the Type 1Mid, I also have a box of ammo for it but I don't think I will try it out.

Navy Arms made some modern .41 rimfire ammunition for it a few years ago.

Regrettably - even that is getting to be a collectable - but at least it was pretty much guaranteed to shoot reliably.

Old rimfire ammunition may not - due to a degradation of the primer.

Remingtons of all models would often develop cracks at the hinge - generally caused by rough or poor handling.

If yours has one - don't shoot it until it's been repaired.

I think I will just look at it or wear it for show at CAS
