protecting outside lubed bullets... lee liquid alox???

one of the biggest problems with outside lubed bullets, either healed ones or those you load for cap-n-ball, is that when stored, the bullets will tend to lose their lube.

One thing I was thinking of trying was using Lee liquid alox to coat the boolits after lubing with BP lube.

The reason for this is 2 fold.

1) keep the lube where its supposed to during storage
2) add additional lubrication

As the lube dryes, which is essentially a form of shelack I am told, it will help prevent the lube from leaking out while stored.

Comments? Suggestions? Recommendations?

I was going to try it with a dozen or so and see how it goes.

The gunwriter Bottom Dealin' Mike did some articles a few years back on heeled bullets & if I remember right he had his best luck when he simply dipped the loaded cartridge (bullet end only) in melted SPG. There won'be be much lube on the bullet with the Alox & my money says you'll have crusty fouling ASAP.  ;)

When I was muzzleloading I used this lube making a bead around my smoothbore's paper cartridges.  It worked great and I was able to load more shots.

I use the stuff to lube the round balls for my 'Heap Bad Medicine' cartridges before I push them thru the sizing die.  It stays where the die doesn't touch them so they're loaded with the stuff on them.  It's right sticky.  There's been no evidence in the pistols of any fouling out of the ordinary.

Trying it isn't going to hurt anything.  My recommendation would be to give it a shot.  The procedure may work for you.   If I dropped one I'd be careful the cartridge didn't pick up any dirt before I chambered it.  Other than that, go for it.

The idea here was to apply a lube that would dry (Lee Liquid Alox) OVER a black powder lubed healed or conical cap-n-ball round.

Not just use LLA instead of a propper BP lube.

I will try and make up some test rounds and see how they work out as far as production capability.

That is what I do with my paper cutter sharps rounds.  Works quite well.

Kindah got that from the original post, Dakota, pard.

I've used outside-lube on a variety of bullets.....not cause I had to, though. Just a quick way to BP-Lube any ol' bullet loaded atop a charge of BP. I just dunk the bullet portion of the loaded cartridge into a melted cup of BP lube (firmer version, say 50/50 beeswax / olive oil). then I use modern (foam divided boxes) packaging to transport. I've modified the ouside of the boxes to look PC, even thought the insert is foam.

I recently shot off my last supply of .38's lubed in this fashion with no problem. They had been on the shelf for at least 3 yrs (loaded/lubed/boxed).

I don't think coating the BP luube with liquid alox will do much (if any) good to preserve.

Now, If your planning to shoot smokeless, liquid alox would probably work fine, alone.

I used Liquid Alox over a runny red lube with smokeless one summer.  No leading in the forcing cones.  So I tried it over SPG w/BP.  The SPG still kept the soot soft.  You do have to wait for it to dry overnight on parchment or wax paper.
