Glossy CCH

How does one remove the glossy finish from the CCh on a USFA Premier SSA. I have seen CCH in it's non glossy state.

What is period correct finish for CCH. If it is not Glossy, then why is USFA doing it to theirs.

I am thinking about taking it off if i can do it without damaging the bluing.

That's a lacquer (varnish?) finish Doug Turnbull puts on the frame.   It acts to protect the colors and it also makes the colors more vibrant.  It will wear off in time and solvent will take it off also.

Period color-case hardening has a blue-grey 'smoky' look to it - like what's seen on a Colt Single Action Army.

Over time - it faded due to use and sun - hence the phrase - 'traces of case hardening in protected areas' - so beloved by dealers in old firearms.

Modern guns often have either an applied wax, varnish or other 'clear' type of sealant to keep that from happening, and removing it's pretty simple - without any 'mechanical' assistance.

Just use a cotton swab and a Toluol-based solvent, and you should be set - and even nail polish remover will work well.

Remember to keep the surface lightly oiled, as you would the rest of the piece.

Leaving it on will make it last longer, but do as you see fit.  Personally I'd leave it alone and let it come off naturally.
