forgive me if this post is on the wrong group page but I am wondering what Rifle I should purchase for the competition?
I have a winchester 94 in .44mag but dont think that would be a good gun....or may not even be legal to use.
I would like to get your take on which maker, caliber, barrel length and so on.
I shoot two Ruger NV .45 LC for my pistols.
thanks in advance for any help you give. I know you will have lots of advice for a somewhat new cowboy.

Fret not, Joey.

We'll leave your question here awhile and if we don't get any answers I'll move it to the Shooters Meetin'.

BTW, the '94 is legal.

Go ahead and take the plunge and get a '73.  Next best is Marlin.

Arcey you could have answered this as well as anybody else.

Well....'cept Arcey would have told you to get a fish gun first.  :D

Whut I would suggest is fer Joey ta take 'iz '94, with appropriate ammo, ta his first shoots.  Look 'n see whut the other folks 'er usin' 'n ask questions.  'N not ta buy nuttin' else 'til he does that.

What Arcey suggested is what I advise also, take the 94 and some mild 44 lead bullet loads to a match.  Then look around and see what others are shooting.  Most pard are more than happy to let you try their guns.

Of course that's not what I DO, I just kept buying and using them until I found what I like.  A more expensive trial and error method.  ;)  If you choose this route start with a repro Win 73 or 66, you may save your self some money and grief.

Thanks....being a gun collector.....I kind of like your second way. I have about 30 guns in my collection thus far. Not all western, but have always just had a love for guns. Thanks.

I don't mean to be contrary with our Chief Deputy Marshal, (sorry Cammie  ;D ) but I am mighty fond of using a '92 in the matches. I have used the Navy Arms, LSI Puma, and my current '92 is the EMF SRC, which I like the best. I have never done action jobs on any of them, just let then smooth themselves out, and the EMF and LSI are as slick as they can be.

Only thing I can recommend is go ahead and get some 44 spl rounds for your existing rifle.

Joe posted on what I want to point out.  Full-power 44mag AINT legal for SASS.  Or NCOWS.  Nor any other CAS-type shooting I know of.

However, I started out in SASS with a '94 Trapper in 44 mag.  I load my own ammo.  I hate to use 38 spl. ammo in .357s  OR 44 spl. ammo in 44 mag. guns - too much extra crud in the chamber from the shorter round (s).  So, I load 44 spl. power loads in 44 mag. cases and the same idea for .357s.  Works fine - but you need to "roll yer own."  There ARE a few Cowboy ammo manufacturers that do load low power rounds in 44 mag (and .357) cases.
