Howdy all,

Got another wild hair and want to get a "pocket model .31 caliber BP revolver"
Seems the choice is 1863 Remington and 1849 Colt.

If you have experience with either or both of these, please offer your thoughts.
And what brand do you speak of.

Thanks

I have a Remington pocket .31, made by Palmetto, sold by Dixie, and it is a piece of crap.  A wall hanger straight out of the box.

Had the 1849 with R&D was fun.  The Kirst with the loading gate would even be nicer.

However, the one that would really get me fired up would be a nice gated cylinder conversion for the 1862 Uberti pocket police.
I have one of these and the nice long barrel and low weight make it a real nice shooter.  I can only imagine what it would be like with a conversion cylinder.

Just got the 1855 replica Colt Root revolver from Palmetto. Nice little gadget..!  Have just shot 15 shots with it.
It works but not a flawless pice. Seems like they have some minor problems with aligning the sylinder with the barrel.

I am with you.  I have a 1862 pocket job also and it handles just so nicely.

Anyway, back to the other question.  I have had the Reminton by Pietta and 1849 Baby Dragoon by Uberti and the later was far superior.  I also had the conversion and sometimes even used it as a main gun.  The new gated conversion from Kirst sure has me wanting another one.

TIZWIN

Mine is a 2nd Gen. Colt Baby Dragoon, currently fitted with an R&D .32 S&W cylinder.  Haven't shot it yet.  I'm hoping to have Happy Trails slick it up a little, especially in terms of lightening the hammer spring.  But it's a cutie--fit and finish is superb.  Tough to beat those 2nd Gen. Colts; but they're getting real pricey and harder to find.  I'd love to have the full conversion--loading gate, ejector rod, etc., but the cost at R&D, plus the wait time, is very discouraging.

Grapeshot

I've got one of the steel framed Pietta 1863 remington Pocket Pistol.  I've fired it with APP and .32 cast bullets made for the .32 S&W.  It works right well.  As soon as I find some 00 buckshot, I'ss use it on a regular bassis.

QWas thinking seriously of getting an R&D conversion cylinder for it to shoot .32 S&W.
Listen!  Do you hear that?  The roar of Cannons and the screams of the dying.  Ahh!  Music to my ears.

I have one of each.  My Remington is a CVA that I bought a long time ago and don't shoot for years at a time, although the quality is good on mine, at least.  It's just a little to small to handle well, for me anyway. I attended  a local Civil War re-enactment several years ago to browse Sutler's Row and picked up a Uberti 1849 Pocket, which I really enjoy shooting.  I opened up the rear sight notch in the hammer and made a little slim jim holster and I carry it when I go woods loafing. As for as I am concerned it is a better choice for shooting, as handling characteristics are much better--its easier to load and shoot than the Remington, plus I hit better with it. Thats my 2 cents worth anyway.  Enjoy.

I have a Pietta Remington .31 cal.
Wroks well. Takes some getting used to, as Jubal noted. Mine is pretty accurate and shoots POA AFTER I made a new front sight (over 2x high as the factory sight).

Well,, here goes. I've got an old Armi San Marco Wells Fargo, and have already made a Conversion ring to fit it, and will soon be chopping and boring the cylinder to chamber the .32 S&W Long. It had a 6" bbl on it, which I've chopped to a 3" and rounded off like the original Colt's Conversions. I'm in the process of making a loading gate for the conversion ring.

Since I've made a move, and all my machenery is still packed away, hopefully, soon I'll be able to complete the job. If all works well, I'll post some photos when I'm finished. I'm looking at a couple of months down the road, so we'll see how it turns out. The .32 S&W short is fine, but I just want something alittle different.

  LOL,,, I can't wait to read the comments to follow !!!  ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D
