Oh, boy, oh, boy, oh, boy!
« on: August 29, 2006, 10:32:08 PM »
Today I sent the money off to Steve Young for a 'Race Ready' Spencer rifle and 5.5" barrel Remington with a .44 Colt conversion cylinder! I might not be able to stop bouncing off the walls until they get here!

Of course, with this being the People's Democratic Republic of Maryland and all, I'm going to have to wait another eight days after they get to the toy store, which is really going to bite the bag. At least I can handle them while I wait, drooling as I hug them and muttering, "...my precious, my precious..."  ;D

Okay, well, I need to start collecting what I'll need to keep them cared for and fed. I've never reloaded any ammunition in my life, so that in itself will be a learning experience. You guys are going to get lots of ignorant questions, 'cuz while I understand most of what you're talking about in these posts, actually doing it always raises more questions.

Okay, back to bouncing off the walls... boing boing boing boing boing boing boing...

"Race Ready" Spencer? That's kind of like a "Formula One Yugo" ain't it?  ;D  And I shoot a 56-50 Spencer!  :D  Frenchie, since we don't want to "horn in" here in the SSS why don't you elaborate on this .44 Colt Remmy over in the SCORRS section as I am very interested in the details and I'm sure the gang over there will be as well.

Frenchie,

Calm down, calm down, I want to hear more about the "Race Ready" Spencer :o :o  As far as reloading, ask those questions here 'cause a lot of the SSS members do that and have the 'know how' to help you out!

Ha! If I'm a gamer I'm the worst ever! Can't shoot fast, but that's okay because I'm a reenactor who likes to shoot. I want to have fun and hit what I aim at 'cuz slow hits are better than slow misses.  :P

For the ones who don't know, "Race Ready" is what Steve Young (aka Nate Kiowa Jones) calls what he does to guns. It means "make it reliable and easier to shoot well", and I need all the help I can get.  ;D

To answer Two Flints: Steve told me he's going to slick up the action and (IIRC) remove one extractor and modify the other. This is a full-length rifle, by the way, which means .56-50 caliber. I'd love to have a .44-40 but Taylor's only has them in the one flavor.

I used my Spencer race gun, 56-50 in a match over Labor Day weekend.  Good thing it was a 3 day weekend as I needed all 3 days to get those 40 shots off, only took 2 sets of Energizers in the sun dial to time me.
Ain't got to where I'm going, but I'm past where I been.

Huh?  The .56/.50 only has one extractor!  He better not remove it!   ;)

Heh. I don't know for sure what he said, Sarge. I trust the man to know what's he's doing, he did an outstanding job on my Pietta .36 Remington, put Treso nipples on it and made it work slicker than Vaseline on a glass doorknob.

In that case, I'll need to be given a week before the match to shoot off the first 30 rounds  :D

Frenchie, you must have gotten your preshious new toys by now!  Tell us how you stoped bouncing if you did? ;D

You see, I`ve been told that my long avaited *Rifle is due to arrive from Italy. Might be at the shores of grand Norwege as we type?
I am about to start bouncing, so I need to know how to stop....! :D

As I have told in a couple of posts to day. I have used the waiting time good. Red Roy M Marcots book and left my DNA on my friends original 5th Mitchigan Carbine...!! ::)

Frenchie and Snapshot,

I have had mine a little over a year now.  You will like it.

Interesting to shoot in a match with it also.  After the first time you will figure out all the little quirks about its action.

Not getting a round in the chamber because you did not lever far enough.  Or  Accidentally cycling two rounds to the chamber.

After that it and I work well together.

No, not yet, and it looks like the Spencer will take longer than the Remington. At first I ordered a full-length rifle in .56-50, but when Taylor's announced that Armi Sport was making a rifle in .44-40 I told Steve I wanted one of them instead. He said Taylor's told him the paperwork to get them imported was in process and he'd get one as soon as possible, but it's going to be a while  :(

My new 56-50 Rifle has arrived in Norway..........Boing - boing, darn I started bouncing of the walls to..!
The good Capt. Redneck has ordered one to, so I am loading up the 100 brass I got from Dakota Widdowmaker.  As my friend lives in another town we have arranged with a couple of girlfriends who are coming to a dog-exibition in my town this weekend, they are bouth CAS shooters to and they are going to bring my Spencer together with a 1842 musket for another friend. Then I will ship half of the loaded rounds to my friend the hardwhere pusher!
This might be a litle difuse, but my long avaited Spencer is due this weekend----------Boing.

Tricks of the trade...
« Reply #14 on: October 03, 2006, 07:01:55 PM »
Well, Y'all are starting off - and it sure sounds like happy shooting comin' your way... Even in the PR of Maryland...
But for this CAS stuff, are there any old hands who can help us (me?) out?

Q: How do you speed up shooting the Spencer?  ???  After you empty the tube, do you reload through the tube, or single-fire?

Reloads During Stages: When I tried mine out at my first shoot, they had us shooting 10 rounds, sometimes 9 or eight - at one stage we shot 7. For most of these stages, you start with an full tube, and then empty it.  I'm guessing there have to be tricks to being quick.

Between shots: I was trying to pull the hammer to full cock while I dropped the gun to cylce the rounds.  Is this the right method, or are there better ways?

Ideas and suggestions welcome.

Thanks

For CAS shooting, load 7, then single load the remainder.

For speed, full cock, then cycle.  With the Spencer still on your shoulder, after firing the shot, drop your elbow to come over the top of the action with your trigger hand, striking the hammer spur with the leading edge of your fingers to cock, then drop your hand, catching the lever with your thumb to cycle it.  Slap it shut with your fingers and fire, never letting the weapon leave your shoulder.
Civilize them with a Krag . . .

Whcadang......What a hot, to shoot... ;D
I shoot my new Spencer Rifle at a small club match.  Perfect place and oportunity to try it out.
Yeah I did all the misstakes mentioned------ But when the posse are shouting for MORE---MORE---MORE it must be something that is done right.. ;D   It syceled just fine, exept for the time I tried to get two rounds in the chamber.
Dakota Widdowmakers mold and recipe works flawless, thanks buddy.!

I am ataching a picture from the club match, enjoy.... We just poped off a couple of Spencer rounds before we took the pic.
Down range of course!
