Howdy to the camp,

Well, it arrived from EMF.  I love it.  I don/t have a .45 Schofield one to compare it to, but it looks identical.  I think they just reamed the cylinder deeper. I will probably shoot schofields most of the time, as the R&D cylinder for the Uberti 1860 Army I have also  takes Schofields, unlike the R&Ds for the 1858, which only take colts.

All in all, it makes a great pair to go with my Spencer Carbine and soon Henry.  Only thing better would be a gated conversion 1858!

Question for ya ,TL
As you know I have the OT in Sch. as is my Spencer , My R&D in my 2 Gen 1860 likes only LC's
must be the rim thickness .
Anyway what about the new short 45 colts ?
Seems they might run in all three ???

How about a test in that direction ?

My 1860 R&D takes the Schofields.  What are the short 45 Colts?  Never heard of them.

That Ultona fellow (Joel Rezac in NE) gave me a great deal on a Taylors' 1872 OT in .44SP.  I just got it (along with a New Model Russian), and took it shooting at shoot here in PA.  It was a real nice shooter.  I was running .44 Russian through it, quite nicely.

Any suggestions for a .44 bullet that would work great for BP loads?  The ball I used was a 200 gr; 'wondering if something bigger (.44 Russian used a 256 gr. ball, I think - on top of 23 gr of BP)

Thanks

There's a .44 Mavdutchman that's just for BP. One of the others that are more well versed can fill in the details..........Buck 8) ;)
I might be slow, but I'm mostly accurate.....

Congratulations on the 45 Colts!  I wonder now why the lady at Cimmaron e-mailed me that they didn't pass proof since I was ordering 44 Colts.  Maybe they made the cylinder a little thicker or she was misinformed.
Enjoy shooting them, they're a hoot.  Mine punctured primers at first.  I replaced the firing pins with less pointy tool steel ones from a company in Rhode Island.  Just fine now.  I'll look up the link and post it if anyone is intersted.

Grapeshot

As much as I like the .45 Colt, I'd really question the logic of making an 1860 Army Framed revolver in .45 Colt.  That round can be loaded mighty stout with BP and Subs.  I'd be worried that the Arbor that the cylinder revolves around would not hold up, especially in the barrel wedge area.

I've seen BP Cap & Ball revolvers that have their barrel wedges pretty well battered from heavy loads.  So, Good Luck and safe shooting.
Listen!  Do you hear that?  The roar of Cannons and the screams of the dying.  Ahh!  Music to my ears.

Howdy Grapeshot,
I think the weak point of this model is going to be the cylinder, not the arbor.  The metal between the cylinder holes and the bolt notches is paper-thin.  I have seen .45 S&W OT with the metal bulged out at this point, and have heard of others that have blown out there.  And of course .45LC is more powerful.

I'll tell a little story about Cimarron and the .45LC OT.  A European CAS shooter named Scattered Thumbs informed me that Uberti listed the OTas being available in .45LC on their site www.uberti-replicas.com .  I pointed this out to Mike Harvey, who was unaware of it, and he looked on his price list from Uberti and sure enough, they listed .45LC.  So Cimarron ordered these from Uberti and even put .45LC as an OT caliber on their website.  This was a couple years ago.   Later that year when Mike was at Uberti for his annual visit, he and Uberti both decided that .45LC was not a good idea, so they dropped plans to make it and that caliber option was removed from Cimarron's website.

Fast forward to mid-2006, when Cimarron's 5-year exclusive ran out on the OT's and R-M conversions, and now Taylors and others can order them.  Uberti never removed the .45LC option from their pricelist or from www.uberti-replicas.com - Taylors sees the option and says hey, we want them, so Uberti builds them.

Those guns are made out of very good steel, but I would still be verrrry careful of what I loaded in one!

By the way, I think these would be awesome guns for mounted shooting with blanks, since they point so well and have that short hammer pull.

Grapeshot

Abilene, I think your right on the cylinder.  I had assumed that Uberty had the sense to make the cylinder a bit thicker and maybe make the revolver about 5% bigger overall to keep things safe.  The only reason I even thought that, is the fact that I own a Jaeger .45 SAA that's around 5% bigger than a Standard Colt / Uberti / Pietta Single Action Army.  Only time will tell.
Listen!  Do you hear that?  The roar of Cannons and the screams of the dying.  Ahh!  Music to my ears.

Abilene

Howdy Grapeshot,
According to Cimarron, Uberti is beefing up the cylinder and frame on the upcoming Type 2 Richards which should make it safer to produce in 45LC, but not the OT.

As you say, only time will tell.

Adios,

Abilene
