« on: February 09, 2007, 11:33:21 AM »
I noticed in a thread that someone had seen one back in September.  Has anyone gotten one yet,how do they shoot?

I just purchased two of them last Thursday.

Haven't had a chance to fire them much because I'm fighting a bad cold but did have a chance to fire two three-shot groups off a bench at about 12 yards.

Grouped right at 1 in.

They do not have a rear sight but holding a full bead over the top of the barrel it shot about 4 in. high.  Holding a fine bead it shot about 1 in high.  Both groups directly over the target.  Load was 3 gr. of Trailboss and a 125 lead bullet.

By the way, they were advertized as being chambered for 38 S&W and 38 Colt.  But mine are chambered for 38 Special and are marked for 38 Colt and 38 S&W Special.

I really like the looks of them which is the main reason I bought them.  Of course they don't have an ejector rod but empties poped out easily with a brass rod.  I'm going to polish the chambers and hopefully the empties will fall out.

Ah ..... Aint there a little "v" notch cut into the hammer nose???  Should be.  Ok, the little "v" is about the same think as no rear sight, but there should be a little "v" ..................

Howdy Coffinmaker,
Uberti made the Man With No Name guns exactly like the original movie gun, which was made with a '72 Opentop frame.  And the hammer on the Opentop does not have the nose on it like a Richards-Mason hammer.  A v-notch in that hammer would be below the plane of the top of the barrel.  And a R-M hammer will not fit in an opentop frame.  I'm told that future shipments from Uberti will have a small rear sight dovetailed into the rear of the barrel.  My thoughts are that this will mess with the cool looks of the gun.  I shoot '51 Richards-Masons myself, and I don't use the hammer notch.  I set the front brass bead on top of the hammer, which essentially puts it right on top of the flat top of the barrel like Bobduck is doing with his, and I aim a little lower than center on the targets.  Works well and is quicker than trying to put the bead into the little notch.

Speaking of doing the guns just like the originals, for the folks who order theirs with the optional snake grips, the grips are sent to the same guy who did Eastwood's grips way back then for the inlaying of the snake.  I'm told he's really old  ;D

After shooting mine with no rear sight I don't think I would want one.

The top flat of the octagon barrel makes it easy to place the front sight in the center of the flat so it's a lot like having a rear sight.

I think a rear sight in a dovetail would spoil the looks of the firearm.

Well .......... shucks.  I never looked really close at the "man with no name" gun (original).  Just figured it was an 1851 with cartridge conversion and the lever left on.  Amazing.  Authenticity!!!  Well, why not.  I've shot matches with no front sight (not planned that way) and I can see where a brass blob on top the hammer would be easy to pick up.
I do have to look closer at that gun though.  Caught with my knickers down around my knee caps.
Gotta go hit the Cimarron site.  Bye
