I just bought a Brolin Industries model 1873 Colt replica in .45LC.  Its made by Pietta.  BP compatiable?  Any modifications needed to make work smoother with BP?  I need some advice since loading my own .45-70's with Bp I have fallen deep into the Darkside.  So I wanna keep it going with this gun if possible.  Any help and info is much apprciated.

ANY gun can be BP compatible.

Just clean, de-oil and re-lube with non-petroleum oil like ballistol or some such and see how it does.  Some will need a little doctoring, but hard tellin 'till ya shoot em.

Seth, Jack, Pards, I'm still rollin' in the aisle.  LOL.

Good answers tho.

If that 73 shoots good with heathen fad smokeyles factory loaded ammo to SAAMI specs, It'll shoot Holy Black.  If the gap between the cylinder face and the rear end of the barrel is too small, it'll build up soot and bind.  Also check the end play.  There shouldn't be much.  The final answer will come when ya takes some known good home rolled black powder ammo and let 'er flicker.  You'll know by the third cylinder full.

I have a brace of RVs in 357 Magnum.  When loaded with bp ammo they wouldn't get past two chambers before all proceedings came to a halt.  They simply didn't have enuf room between the cylinder face and the back end of the barrel.  Walt Kirst "adjusted" 'em for me and I've not had any problem since.  It's the brace of pistols I hand to new shooters.  I'm proud to say that they had so much fun with 'em that I'm batting 800 on getting converts to the Darkside.

Shoot 'em and report back.  The guns will talk with ya.

Food grade oil is the ticket .. save the WD 40 fer the smokeless powder guns ... I only oil my Black Powder guns with olive oil ..and never a problem ... Petro base oils turn into sticky when used in Black Powder guns .
Sounds like your haveing fun ..with the new addiction .. ;D

Bristow Kid,
Bring it along to the GAF Muster. We can put a bunch of BP rounds thru it and see what happens.

Thanks for all the advice y'all.  I plan on shooting Bp in it after this weekend.  I just purchased the gun last weekend and haven't loaded any bp loads.  Still need to get the .45LC dies before I can roll my own.

Slim Me and the gun will be there.  Looking forward to meeting ya.

Howdy!  Bristow Kid!

You've got some good suggestions.  I'm with Arcey - and the others.

Except for one detail.  NEVER cap the cylinders before putting in the powder!

See:

Prime It
Stuff It
Plug It
Grip It
Rip It
Observe
Adjust
Repeat

I don't mean to be too picky.  I DO suggest this as a safety hint.

Have fun, B.K.!

Sounds like a Darksider fer sure!

They'll be havin' fun at the GAF Muster.  Bristow Kid sounds like he'll be gettin' broke in right!  Now, we have to get him interested in NCOWS so he can have even MORE fun!

***** Note to interested readers 'bout my NCOWS comment *****

To make things purrfeckly clear: despite some rumors, you DON'T  have to shoot BP to be an NCOWS member.  It's just more fun if ya do!  ;D   Folks what wanna shoot smokeyless powder are VERY welcome.

;D ;D ;D Boy ya don't need to wait fer Slim to get home to hear about my grin.  Slim was kind enough to loan me 10 BP .45LC rounds to start off the side matches Friday morning.  Thanks again Slim.  Boys I loaded up the BP pills and walked to the line to fire.  Just a reminder I had never fired this gun even with heathen rounds till Friday morning.  We were shooting plastic Easter eggs on the ground.  You pulled 5 from a bag and shot the corrisponding color in the order you drew them.  I shot a perfect 5 for 5 with the BP smoke just a belching outta my pistol.  I could tell by the way my face felt I was grinning from ear to ear.  I am definately hook on the Darkside.  The gun functioned perfectly with 10 rounds of BP before cleaning(had to switch to heathen loads for the remained of the shoot).  I had a blast and will be shooting BP from now on.

P.S.  SHB  I am an NCOWS member and have been shooting Buffalo and mid & Long range NCOWS matches all summer. ;D ;D ;D ;D

Slim thanks again for the bullets I will let you know how my loads turn out and a big thanks for the loan of the ammunition.  I really appreciated it and it was a blast to shoot.

Sounds like ya had a blast there Kid .. funny some folks complain about the smoke getting in the way .. but if it didn`t bother ya ...your a black powder shooter from the get go ...i don`t think i`d know how to aim with out the cloud of smoke in front of me and the boom of the black powder makes the smokeless guns sound like pop guns . black powder turns a hand gun into a hand cannon .. ;D

If it's an 1873 cartridge clone I don't think there's any problem priming before putting the powder into the cases. The powder tends to run out if you don't prime the cases first.

C&B is a different story. Cap it last.
That's bad business! How long do you think I'd stay in operation if it cost me money every time I pulled a job? If he'd pay me that much to stop robbing him, I'd stop robbing him.

Ya probably inherited every penny ya got!

Yer very welcome, Bristow Kid. It was a great pleasure meeting and shooting with ya.
