Ho Pards,

Just back from a fantastic weekend of partridge hunting.  My new dawg, Bear, made his first partridge hunting trip.  Now, you might think, "whut's a 125 pound black lab pup doing huntin' grouse?".  Ok, I  didn't fill up, but I did bring back some fine partridge breasts.

I did get one double.  Bear, that's my lab, started pokin' around in a clover field.  I  told him, "no Bear - they're in the trees".  He told me, "no Dick, they're in this field".  He was rite.  He flushed three of 'em and I doubled on two.  It was great fun shootn' quick upland game with my lil Stevens 311 SxS and my bp cowboy action loads.  But, when the smoke cleared, Bear brought me two dead birds.  I'm thinkn' he'll get some of the gravy on his dawg food soon. . .

So, bp ain't just for SASS no more.  It's a great way to shoot game.  Feels good to think grandpa might have enjoyed something similar.

It's funny. When I was a boy learnin' to shoot back in the fifties some of the old timers had learned to shoot with Black. They were so glad for smokeless. We had a few old BP ca'tridge guns around, they were mostly toys. Had the firing pins rusted solid with iodine if memory serves.
My Grandpa learned to shoot with Black, his deer rifle when he died was a sporterised M1903 Springfield. He had a heard attack and died before he could get delivery on that .257 Weatherby he'd been dreaming about for ten years.
The wheels go 'round.

I'm a transition kind of guy.  Like my grandpa, I hunted for meat.  Now, I  hunt for fun.  If I had to price out the cost of the game I put on my table, I'd never be able to afford the meals.  But, as fun, it's priceless.

Grandpa had fun too, but he took his hunting more seriously.  I enjoy the hunt also, but I take my fun seriously.  Times change, memorys recall the good stuff and the present is where we act it out.

Love hunting with Holy Black.
