I was at the range today and included in the shooting line-up was my 56-50 carbine. While policing up brass before packing up to go home I happened to find the rear sling swivel laying under the shooting bench. It apparently come off while shooting and I never realized it. More searching and I was lucky enough to find the screw too.

Lesson learned. I decided just to leave it off but were I to put it back in place it might be with a dab of locktite or at least periodic checking to make sure it's snugged up.

P.S. My cast bullets made with a DWM mold are noticeably more accurate then some from a commercial supplier.

Hi Pinkerton Agent,

Well, how did you do at the range?  And which commercial ammo supplier did you use?  I'm in the process of repairing my original Spencer, but have been giving serious thought to getting one of the Taylor 56-50 carbines.  I own a Taylor's .45 Schofield now, but ...if the wife says go ahead, I'll go for the bigger caliber maybe as my Christmas present.  Any information I can get here on the 56-50 from one of the SSS members will be a big help in helping me decide.

Two Flints,

The other bullets I was using were from Western. They are 330 FN, sized ~.512. The ones that I do in the DWM mold are .513-514 depending on what's coming out of the lead pot. The DWM's stay in the black on the 6" round bullseye targets I use (at 50 yards). The ones I got from Western shoot noticeable to the right.

With either bullet if I keep the OAL at 1.598-1.602 the carbine functions flawlessly.

I've decided to keep the rear sling swivel off as it just gets in the way. I don't use a sling on this carbine, and besides, there is no front sling swivel.

Pinkerton Agent,

Maybe you should re-think your decision to not use the rear sling swivel, and then you'd be right up there with a famous person in American history...John Wilkes Booth...see what he did with his rear sling swivel :-\

;D
