Query on Originals Class - Handguns

Okay, I intend to get into the Originals class as one or both of the following:

US Army infantry or ordnance sergeant, late 1872; Spencer 56-50 infantry rifle; either Colt or Remington cartridge conversion revolver in .44 Colt caliber.

US Navy petty officer, ditto; handgun in .38 Long Colt (and a cutlass, arrrr...)

I've got the June 2006 Tally Book (and Marlan's "Creating the NCOWS Outfit"), and I believe I understand what is required for the Originals class. I note that there is nothing about the calibers required; that is, nothing says I have to shoot calibers that are the modern equivalents of those that were available in 1872.

In other words, as I read them, the rules can be interpreted to allow (and here's hoping this is not too big a can of worms) any NCOWS-legal caliber. However, what I am doing is assuming that using the .44 Colt and .38 Long Colt in my handguns (the 56-50 Spencer is already taken care of) will get me more points, or at worst will not cost me points, in the overall scoring.

I came to these conclusions by thinking like a progressive reenactor who is trying to make sure his material culture is as correct as possible. Does any of this drivel make sense? I want comments, opinions, advice! Even if your answer is, "Frenchie, you moron, you've got it all wrong!", at least tell me where I'm wrong

  Frenchie, You have it all right!! Any NCOWS legal caliber is fine for the originals class ,  As far as which persona you choose, as long as you can verify that character could reasonably have the firearm in question, in the time you are portraring , you are good to go. always glad to see another Original on board.       jt

Howdy Frenchie,

Bullseye!  I'm sure that your progressive outlook will keep you straight. 

My Original persona uses a Colt SAA in 45LC [Baretta clone] and a Win. 73, [Uberti clone] also in 45LC which keeps ammo simple.  Simple is good where I am concerned. 

Marlan uses a Spencer and you both have my sympathy!   But, it sure looks like fun and it is really cool!!

Either impression sound great.  I am looking forward to seeing your persona!
