I understand that the 1895 Nagant is legal for CAS. Does anyone on this board use one and if so, what is your opinion of this weapon?  ???

As it is a double-action pistol, it is not legal for SASS. But, it is legal for NCOWS.

Wasn't it also issued in a SA-only version?  ???

They may have been, but I don't know. The info, I Googled, stated they were DA.

Howdy all,
don't remember all the details, but there is a single action only version. My understanding is that it's less available and thus costs more. Take care.

I beleive there was a discussion on this that the double action can be converted to single action very easily.

I only shoot to support my reloading habit.

We have a member that has one that is single action and shoots it regularly.

It's a bit cumbersome and slow but hey, it's not all about speed.   ;) :)

The single actions as per my understanding hare highly tuned target guns and don't use the gas seal, I think many are 32 S&W Long and shoot wadcutters.

No, not @ all, this conversion to .32 S&W Long is a Rather resent thing here in the U.S. for those that did not wish to trouble themselves w/ finding & shooting the Nagants Original Gas Cheque Cartridge.

As per the Norm for the European Military minds, N.C.O.'s were allowed to carry a Sidearm, but Only in the Single Action variation, where as Officers could carry the Double Action varition.

I know there were many "surplus: changed to 32 S&W Long, but there was an atrical somewhere about 15 years ago somewhere on the target versions of the Nagants, they don't use the gas seal and I'm sure most were 32 S&W Long.  Don't know where I read it, but it was an article on 32 Long wadcutter target loads.

Cheque "Guns & Ammo" for that article.

Could have been, I got rid of most that stuff, I was playing with 32 Long Wadcutters in a 32 mag at the time, was why I even bought the magazine.

Doggone, read this thread and hadda go get my '38 M1895 outta the safe.

Yep, came in both DA & SA flavors, & the DA can be converted to SA without a lotta fuss.  DA pull is horrible, but there are a couple tricks for lightening and smoothing it a bit.

Tried Fiocchi & some surplus Russian stuff - mild, reasonably accurate but smoky & dirty ammo.  Over on the military surplus sites, there was always a debate about the safety of .32H&R mag in Nagants (one manufacturer - don't recall which - even stated that their H&R mag was safe for 'em).  I tried it - frame heated up real quick and there was always an impressive flash around the cylinder, but the cases only bulged a wee bit, never stuck & never split.  Seemed a bit much for the frame, so I don't recommend it.

Other folks have gotten hold of aftermarket .32acp cylinders made for th M95, and back when a custom ammo maker was putting up some 10.4x38 rounds for a Swiss M1878 Vetterli for me, he mentioned that he had the original Russian dies & molds for Nagant target ammo, so I got a couple boxes.  Sweet stuff (though the bullets weren't rebated into the cases like the true thing), but very expensive.

Nagants are inexpensive & fun, if slow to reload.  Probably need to handload for best results & cost-efficiency.
