Schofield gave up.....

Well in the last match I shot in '09 one of my Schofields gave up the ghost.  The gun did not make the first stage before quitting.  Not sure of the nomenclature but it seems there is a little somewhat flat c shaped spring attached to the hammer and it broke right in one hook.  Now for the sad part, needing a couple of other spare parts for other guns I called VTI and found out that not one of my items made by Uberti is in stock.  To add insult to injury I was told that it would be over a month before the next order comes in and even then parts that are on order tend to be somewhat questionable on availability!

Right now I have three Ubertis, with one being very questionable on its spot in the barn.  I am thinking about scavenging the necessary part from it until a new one can be obtained.  This also allows more time to consider its short term fate!  Just looking I would say these are simply drop in but does anyone have anything extra to add on these little springs before installing?

I'm guessing you're talking about the hand spring, which locates in a small channel in the hammer and is held in with a tiny pin. It has a kind of "C" shape close to one end.

Anyway, nothing special that I can add other than to say I have found it very advantageous to polish any flat spring that I hope to make last. It's about eliminating machining marks, burrs and the stress risers that they create -- especially on the spring's edges.
Uberti springs are very rough from the factory, from what I've seen.

A smooth spring will outlast the rough ones by many times in my experience.

Hope your parts come in soon.

Thanks Irish, that is one step I would not have considered and yes I do believe that was the name shown on VTIs parts list.  Surprisingly, it seems the overall economy not withstanding, Uberti must really be busy and unable to keep up with production of spare parts.  Good for us in many ways, that is what keeps our desires held in high regard by manufacturers.

You can order all uberti parts straight from cimmarons website, I've ordered some weird ones and never had a problem. I've also called various mfg and told them the part I needed and they've sent them free. Good luck

Try this   suzanne.webb@ubertireplicas.it

Ms. Webb has sent needed screws to me ,direct from Gardone at no cost when VTI Taylor's and Cimerron did not stock them...
I for one was very impressed with her kindness, the screw did not break but was lost and still was replaced with a few spares in case I'm careless again !

You are correct. I know when Old Top was assembling his 1860 grips/tg/bs to his Great Westerns to make a poormans Alchemista, the screws from current GW2's AND from current 1860's didn't fit properly. EMF didn't have the screws either, so I wrote Alchemista (Mr. Pietta) and he had a couple of sets sent out directly free of charge.

I still think that Old Top was the one to get them to make the Alchimesta. He was hounding them for a set of grips/bs/tg for at least 2 1/2 years, and then all of a sudden there is the Alchemista. (with some damn fine improvements I might add.)
