I am getting myself a new (to me...) Winchester '73 in 44-40.
Seeing as I may want to shoot the same cartridge in pistol, is there anyway to convert a Remmie 58 clone to fire 44-40 cartridges? I have got a quote on new barrel and cylinder at $300. Does this seem reasonable? What were the original remmie 'conversions' chambered for?

Forty Rod

For $300 I'd start shopping around for a used '75 in .44-40.

Good advice, Forty Rod.

I agree with 40Rod.  Makes a better buy.

Original '58 Remingtons were converted to .46 Rimfire and .44 RTemington which was very much like a .44 Colt.

I did see one '58 Remington Original Conversion that was chambered for .45 Colt in the same manner that R&D does theirs.
Listen!  Do you hear that?  The roar of Cannons and the screams of the dying.  Ahh!  Music to my ears.

Yup! Start looking fer a good used 44-40 75 Remmie! Iffin you go the 58 conversion route yer looking at having a custom cylinder made and sleeving the barrel. Too much work and money involved.

Try to find an older production 75 if you can, they handle BP better than the more recent runs of them. The cylinders were almost a 16th of an inch shorter making for a longer boss at the front of it and deflecting fouling better.
