I am looking for a little advice here as to shooting equipment and rules.

Firstly let me explain my situation.

I have recently had an accident that resulted in a severe cut to the plam of my left hand.

It has healed but I find that I have lost flexibility in my last two fingers on that hand.

Actually gripping anything with moderate presure causes extreme pain. Looks as though the tendons / ligaments (not sure which) have been damaged.

My usual style of shooting is with two strong hand holsters but shooting right handed. My left hand draws the revolver and transfers it too my right. This is painfull at slow speed let alone at anything approaching competition rate.

I have found that if I bandage the hand and put some padding over the area that is damaged I can use it much more comfortably.

My question is related to this.

To stay in period I would rather wear a pair of gloves to shoot with. Gauntlets or kid gloves maybe. This would alow me to be able to use my left hand as I can pad out under the glove.

Is this allowed in CAS?

Can one handle ones firearms whilst wearing gloves if they are period style?

I know I can go to cross draw holster to draw and shoot both pistols with my right hand but I am not comfortable with this yet and I will have to outlay more cash for a new holster for the left side. There is also a problem with this cross draw physically for me. I have had 3 disks fused in my lower spine and the shuffle to draw the pistol safely and not break the 170 rule can cause as much pain as the hand. It would definitely not be safe for me.

Thoughts on this would be appreciated. ALso point me to somewhere I can find period style gloves with enough feel to handle pistols safely.

I hope I have explained this properly.

Gloves are no problem - you've most likely already figured out to use some on the thin side so you can feel what's happening.

Have been shooting with a glove on the left hand since I started CAS over 10 years ago (only the left hand, not the right).  I'm a right hand duelist; I draw my left pistol with the left hand and transfer it to the right.  I use roping gloves from a riding tack store; thin deer or cow hide snug fitting gloves.  I did it initially for style, then when I went to BP, it was a necessity to keep from frying my left hand on my SXS!
It is SASS legal and my gloves are period correct.

Dai,  couple of us shooting 1860 Henry's also wear a glove on our left hands cuz of the heat from the One True Powder However I can't handle a pistol very good with a glove on so remove it when I shoot left handed.  I am not sure if you can get this type in NZ however there's a brand of work glove here called Wells Lamont, they make a nice affordable Deerskin glove, and would be stylish for Cowboy shooting. Some of the Western Horse Tack company's may also handle them along with Roping Gloves.

Thanks for the replies.

Last Thursday I had an operation on the hand. I lost the use of the last two fingers of my left hand.

All went well. They removed some glass that was still in the wound and rimmed up some scar tissue that was pushing on the tendons to those two fingers.

Hand is painful so I will be going to these work gloves.

The one SASS shoot I've ever been in, I wore thin, brown, period-correct, leather gloves. At the pre-shoot meeting, one guy raised the issue of my gloves and was told by the RO, "The rules don't prohibit them, so they are allowed." It was only later, when I found out what a "gamer" was, that I realized the guy who challenged the gloves must have been a gamer on the lookout for someone else getting an advantage. If I'd realized that at the time, I could have told him I was no competition (I placed dead last). They'd have had to be magic gloves (Dungeons & Dragons +2 to hit) to have helped me  ;D

I wore thin deer skin gaunlets until last year even in the hot summer months, I put a leather wrap on my rifle because it was cheaper than the gaunlets...  I do miss my "signature" gaunlets thought... ;D

Dai.S.Loe:

The Shooter's Handbook is quite clear about gloves. They are perfectly legal. The only type of glove not allowed is modern shooting gloves. I'm quoting from memory here, but I 've read it a zillion times. It's in the back in the 'Outlawed' section.

HOWEVER....................SASS is very specific that handicapped, or physically empaired shooters may do whatever is necessary in order to compete safely. It's buried somewhere in one of the handbooks, I just can't find it right now. So if a shooter has bad feet, he can where sneakers, even though the rules say no. The same thing goes for your hand. If it hurts, and is unsafe for you to shoot without a glove, you certainly have permission to use one.

By the way, I use a glove on my left hand all the time with my shotgun. It has a tiny splinter fore stock, and when firing Black Powder in the summer, the barrels are usually too hot to hold without getting burned.
That's bad business! How long do you think I'd stay in operation if it cost me money every time I pulled a job? If he'd pay me that much to stop robbing him, I'd stop robbing him.

Ya probably inherited every penny ya got!
