Ok here we are, it's 1800 something and were walking from St. Louis to the pacific ocean. On a good day you can acctually make 20 miles. i realize those folks were up with the sun or before and on the move. I wonder when "what time of day" did they stop for the night to make camp, care foir the animals they had with them, maybe hunt and shoot some game, cook food, eat, clean up and go to sleep. I have read some lewis and clark books but don't remember any hints as to the daily routine. I also realize that weather was probably the thing that metered their progress along with the oxen, cows and or horses. I also know they did not travel in single file like the movies portray, they spread out over the prarie and tapered back in together for the nights and crossing creeks and rivers and such terrain. Everyone pretty much walked as the wagons were full and very rough ridin.

Does anyone have a clue as to what they shot for, as a good time of day to stop?

I've seen recently that up at 4:30 to five, breakfast and packing plus breakfast by 7-7;30, stop for an hour or so around 11 and find a place to camp by 3-4.  Should be 2 1/2 miles an hour on a good day.  Not a real grueling pace.

Tim McCoy wore 10 inch crown hats in the silent films.  Tim McGraw is just one of these modern singers who can't sing.  He wears a straw hat spray painted black. :P

Slim, Where is Leon Township located? I have been in the Indian Head region rice lake Mud lake to be exact. It is beautiful there. I loved Wisconsin, when I took a trip up there to visit friends. Oh and the cheese was to die for man. Your neighbors really know how to make that stuff taste so good.
