Tangle Eye

Howdy pards!  I just stumble in here after Big Hext mentioned it in an email when TFS went down yesterday.  Looks like a great spot - always like to participate in black powder discussions and read other folks' ideas. I've learned a lot on the other boards and look forward to hangin out here.

How do, Tangle! I'm glad I managed to get over here too. Plenty of friendly conversation and familiar faces, plus some new folks whose minds I haven't had the opportunity to warp yet!  ;D

welcome aboard Tangle, some nice folk here.

I do believe we had been dicussing rolling blocks over at TFS; I just today ordered a .50 cal barrel for my latest project, I gonna build me a 50-110.  105 grains of FG and the Lone Star 715 grain bullet should loosen my old shoulder up some.

:o Eph - that thing may loosen more than your shoulder!  ;D  I was just thinking about trying some 405 or even 385 grainers in my .45-70s for a "plinking" load.  I havn't really started developing a load for my Roller yet - it doesn't seem to like the 535 grain Lyman Postell over 60 grains of FFFg Swiss that my Browning and Sharps like.  I was seriously thinking of a lighter short range load for the Roller.

Tangle Eye, the thing about the 50-110 that I like is that it is more versatile then the 50-90, gives me more room to play with different loads and still be in the "Big 50" class.

My pet load for my 45-70 Rolling Block is the 535 grain Postell 1:20, .30 Walters wad over 63 grains of cartridge Goex, Remington cases and Federal bench load primers.  I seat the bullet deep as the barrel on that rifle seems to like them better that way.

I have had very good luck from 200 out to 850 yds with that load.

That's kinda close to my .45-70 load except that I use 60 grains of FFFg Swiss.  My idea was the FFFg Swiss would give me a higher velocity for a flatter trajectory. Don't know if this is a good thing or not.  I'm gonna try FFg Swiss after my supply of FFFg runs out. You must be compressing that powder a lot. I use a Buffalo Arms compression die and compress my 60 grains a BUNCH to get the Postell in deep enough to just touch the rifling on the Browning.  I use that same load in my Sharps with very good results also.

I wish I had a Postell bullet mould that would drop more than one at a time.  Casting bullets is a long term career with that one.   :-\

I use a drop tube and the compression die and you are right I am really compressing things but it works.

I have a pard who suffers from OCD that does most of my casting and he loves it, he says he can really lock himself into the routine and time flies.

I think I might try that 395 grain bullet that buffalo Arms sells over about 53 grains of cartridge in my trapdoor carbine, i have always shot 405s and 55 grains, and never had much luck with accuracy with that.

I'm planning to spend some of my time off during the holidays working on a load for the Roller.  I'll also need to resight in my Sharps (I hope) - my long brass scope from RHO should be here in a month or so. I'll probably order some bullets of various types from Buffalo Arms to try out. Once I find something I like I'll get a mould.  I want to try those .45-70 bullets Dick Dastardly has designed too.

i have talked to Randy at RHO several times about scoping a rifle for what I spend on a set of Baldwin sights I could just about pay for a scope.

i have a  Savage copy of a favorite in .17 that I have been playing with, got a new green river barrel and some pretty wood to restock it and I think one of the shorter RHOs in about 3.5 power would be classy.

it has always bugged me that buffalo shoots like the "Q" do not allow scopes, they would be more period correct then soule sights.
