I've got one of the above. I've never seen anything in Cimarron literature showing they ever made such a beast.......just .44's and now I understand in .45 Scho. Does anyone know how many of these .38S&W's were imported and sold here?

I may depend on when yours was manufactured...

The current guns are by Uberti....  take a good look, does it have an Richards Type I /1860 barrel or the R&M/Opentop barrel.

ASM manufactured 38 cal. Type I (ish)  conversion in the early to mid 90's.
These were Imported by Cimmaron, Navy Arms, EMF and it seems USPFA under their pre- name change to USFA.
These were not bad guns, however, Traditions also imported these at a cheaper price, and quality reflected the cheaper price.

Tradition's copies were hit and miss as to quality control , fit & finish... mostly I've seen the Tradition's Navy Conversions.

I have seen a few Army Conversions, one Cimmaron , and a EMF or two, these were far better.

Mine is an 1860.....latest issue from Uberti purchased new about 6 months ago. I answered my own question this afternoon when I read on this forum that Uberti produced approx. forty 1860 conversions with an 8" barrel in .38S&W. The cylinder is not stepped and looks like a 51', barrel is not for an Open Top with rear sight and is a full 8" in length. That makes mine either very collectible or very undesirable..... depending how you look at it. It shoots like a dream.

undesirable ?? NOT by a Long SHOT !  ;D

sounds like a keeper, I'd like to see it.... I didn't know there were any made in 38 in 06.
That's unique with only 40 made, I'll keep a eye out.

any chance you could post a photo ?

Are you sure its a .38 S&W and not a .38 S&W Special?  Seems odd Uberti would be making .38 S&W's since no one has chambered that round for many years.

Uncle Stinky

Let me clarify......It's a new Cimarron 1860 R-M Conversion by Uberti, .38 S&W Special, 8" round barrel with no rear sight, notched hammer, non-rebated cylinder with Navy battle scene. Odd but true. Looks like a regular .44cal but with a '51 cylinder.

I remember the post , even responded to it.

here's what he said  "....Oh yeah, one other thing.  Uberti made a "mistake" and made some mongrel guns.  They are Richards-Mason "Army" conversions in 38 Spcl.  They have Army grips, frame and cylinder appear to be regular '51 R-M parts (not rebated cylinder and stepped frame of the '60), and it has a round 8" barrel.  I think they got 40 or so of these guns.  So if someone wants a 38 Spcl conversion but wants the Army grip, or if you just want something "different", you might consider this one."

Pretty cool there , Bill  :)
