The thread on cutting from the back side and all the comments about marking brings up another question. When marking dark leather (especially black) what do you use? I have been using a quilters pen in white (not that easy to always find) it shows up good and can be wiped off with a damp sponge from smooth leather, on suede I mark the back. White tailors chalk just does not work for me.  Has anybody found anything that works good? I am always looking for new ways to improve. I'm not talking about just cutting marks, but also for layout of spots or bling blings, etc.
Nolan's point about the red pen on tooling leather was a great help, and one that I will use. Any other ideas?

I sometimes use an artist's pastel pencil in yellow. Seems to work fine and its chalky residue wipes off easily with a damp cloth.

I've used a silver pencil or a red ballpoint pen. The pencil doesn't make too much of a mark and can be removed easily. The red ballpoint is another somewhat good solution since the ink is shiny and shows against the leather. You won't see it after as the edge just gets beveled off anyway. I'lll have to try the silver sharpie. It may be the best solution yet.

I also use it also when I am tracing my templates on xray film.  I use the film instead of cardboard for items that I make often like shotgun slides and stage strips and some holsters if I make it more than once.
