Do we use replacement springs for the Colts, or Clones? Who has the better ones to use? How much?

Capt. John Fitzgerald

I use these two springs from Brownells;

Wolff reduced power mainspring (hammer) part # 969-322-800  $15.00

Heinie wire trigger/bolt spring - part # 394-630-000  $6.75
You can't change the wind, but you can always change your sails.

Four-Eyed Buck

That's Wolff's part number for the spring for the real Colts( 32280) it also works with a little hole enlarging for an EAA Bounty Hunter.............Buck 8)
I might be slow, but I'm mostly accurate.....

Definitely use "Colt" as the reference as USFA SAA's are built to the specs of an original Colt.  Depending upon what you are using your sixgun for, becareful on using the lighter springs.  I have found stock springs provide a 3 1/2 - 4 lb. trigger pull, and Wolff springs definitely made for a lighter and smoother feeling action and took trigger pull as low as 2 - 2 1/4 lbs., which in actual shooting practice allowed some premature firings with a hair trigger under normal shooting conditions.  It actually scared me enough I went back to the stock spring.

In trying other lightening ideas I also found the little washers you can get from Brownell's were difficult to use because tightening the spring screw enough to firmly hold the spring without squishing the daylights out of the spring was hard to guage.  I actually found the little piece of leather trick was the best, the spring screw can be tightened, the action was lighter and felt smoother, but hammer fall was still firm and positive.  The only concern is of course consistency and moisture control so no rust develops between the trigger guard and the spring.  Just food for thought.
