 :) Hey Everybody ;)

I could use a little help.  I have acquired a previously abused Uberti 1866 in 44 Special.  I am trying to bring it back and I think I will need to "fire lap" the barrel.  It has some rust damage in the bore and I would like to try about a dozen 200Gr JACKETED bullets through the bore.  Only, I don't have ANY jacketed bullets.  So: here I am, on the street corner with my Tin Cup hoping for a kind soul with a dozen or so bullets.  I already have a bunch of work in this rifle and would hate to have to "write it off" without the last gasp of lapping the bore.  Pretty Please??

The closest I have to that is 240gr jacketed soft point, I think. Haven't seen them in years but I know where they are, however I won't be back there for a couple weeks.  If you still need any by then and those will work let me know.

Will these work? I probably have 40 or so, you can have all you want.

Slim,

:) Those will certainly work.  How about I send you my particulars in a PM??  Somewhere around 12 or 15 should do it.

Firelapping is done with professional grade lapping compound and soft lead bullets. Neco industries in CA used to be where I obtained my firelapping kits from, it consists of four different sizes of grit starting with 400 and ending with 1500 grit. Four rounds are shot with each grit for a total of twelve rounds. The bore is cleaned after every shot, these rounds are loaded with reduced velocity. Been doing this for 35 years, easy but tedious.

 :) Thanks Wildman  ;)

I'm doing this one in two stages.  Also hoping to get away with "quick and dirty" for this job.  Wish Me luck.  Basically trying to smooth over some rust galling.

If you would like I can dig out my FL kit and print the instructions and grit sizes for you. Or you can PM me your cell # and I will take a pic of it and text it to you.

PS I firelapped a 94 in 25-35 that had a sewerpipe for a bore. It was so bad shooting from a rest at 50 yards the best group was about 6". After firelapping I shot a 2  1/4" inch group at 200 yds.

I picked up the Wheeler Bore Lapping Kit at an auction and have been thinking about doing all my guns.  I figure it can't hurt; only problem is finding the time!

The Wheeler kit has grits of 220, 320, and 600.  The instructions specifically say it can be used with jacketed bullets.  I'd still usually use lead, but unless I run across some 6mm lead bullets, I may be using jacketed in the 6mm Lee Navy.

THANKS GUYS!!  I'm gonna try the "quick and dirty" first and if it doesn't work well enough, I'll source up a Wheeler Kit and do it the "long way."

I've got a small jar of JB Bore Paste at home somewhere that I've had for 25 years.  I have no idea where I got it, nor why.  :D I think maybe I had read it was good to break in new bores, but never did.   Hope I never need to use it.  :)
