Bullshooter!

I did papers on a new Chiappa Spencer carbine today in .44-40 Win at my LGS. Looked real nice, but for one spot about 1 inch in diameter on the buttstock that looked like a rub thru the finish, not sure how. Rifle comes in the hard case they seem to ship in, my .45 S&W came in one also.

Sadly due to WA state waiting periods and a holiday and weekends in between, I wont be able to bring it home until the 21'st of this month!

When I have it I will post up a couple of pics.

I had planned to shoot the .45 S&W tomorrow, but we are getting snowed on and its cold, so may not be able to do that, its a 30 mile run each way to the range.

I haven't bought a long gun since the new laws went into effect. I forgot that there was a waiting period for them now too (in addition to pistols).  :-\

Congratulations, though!  We're looking forward to pictures and maybe a range report.

Yeah, it angers me, but hasnt really slowed down my purchase rate by much. ;D

10 business days for all firearms, black powder muzzleloaders are considered antique so are still exempt from the nonsense.

Finally got it home just now after the waiting period with weekends and holidays stretching it out to over 2 weeks total.
First impressions are positive, though its different from my other one in .45 S&W which has two side extractors. I looked inside this and didnt see any! Got the manual out and see extractor in the parts list, see the little tiny picture of it, look closely at this gun and had that 'Oh there it is' moment. Single extractor at the bottom of the chamber! But hey it works.
Also different in that this one can be direct chamber loaded, where the .45 cannot, the extractor difference? Either way its a preferred feature to be able to chamber load.
Found a little check in the wood up at the buttplate tang, pretty sure its just a natural check, but its obvious so at some point I may dribble some glue into it if it starts opening at all. We shall see.
I like the way this one balances better than the bigger bore .45, .44 WCF is a smaller hole, so more metal up front, just plain balances better.
Pics up in a little while.

Quote from: DeaconKC on February 23, 2025, 05:03:40 PMOoh, that's a good looking rifle!

Thanks!!  Plan to shoot it this week. Its a slick feeder with proper bullet style, RNFP. Coned shape FP's are OK, but tend to snag on the way.

Hello, Bullshooter!

Yep a looker.
Haven't seen the gold accented lettering before.

Please share your load details:
Bullet mould, weight, alloy, powder and charge, lube and primer.
Maybe a target photo.

Please check your PM's for my message. Tx.

All the best.  Thanks.

Bullshooter!

I got it to the range today, did some 50 yd shooting with some lead loads and jacketed from other .44-40's in my employ.
Started out way left, thumped the rear over a bit to bring it around, will need fine tuning when more shooting shows some distinct preferences.  It seemed to like the stuff I had with me, using both W231 and Unique powders in low range amounts for so called weaker actions. Only thing I had that I would not shoot again was the jktd load with a higher load of Unique. Nothing bad happened but after firing, it needed cool down time before extraction or it took twice to clear it out. Brass and primer showed no evidence of overpressure, could be an anomaly but to avoid it I wont load it again. The load is safe in my other weaker type guns in .44-40.
The jacketed bullets were some soft points of .427 dia and the leads were from Desperado and .428 dia.
Only complaint was the trigger which by most standards would be called horrendous. Poundage is probably 10+#, but I dont have a gauge that goes that far.  It goes, click, click...click, then boom. Takes some kinda serious concentration to 'squeeze' one off like that!
Hoping that will smooth out some over time. I dont want to send it back just for that.
I took a couple pics at 50, so  a little fuzzy but you can see the potential.  First target after shooting a couple different loads, way left, then the other target after more of the same, but the group on the right of 5 ladder shots, was the aforementioned load that is too warm for this rifle apparently, but it shot well. I was holding just below that group.
All in all I was quite pleased with it.
