Making your own powder

I just found this and thought I'd share, lots of good information for those interested in making their own powder.

Not sure I'll bother for my day to day needs, but it's good information to have on hand should you have no choice (think antigun nonsense or TEOTWAKI type stuff, or even just another ammo panic).  This kind of stuff is actually why I first became interested in cap and ball revolvers (and through that cowboy action shooting), it was 2020 and the ammo shelves had been literally bare for months on end and the only way to find ammo was to pay insane scalpers prices, which I refused to do on principle.  With cap and ball I could always cast my own bullets, make my own powder, and I even bought a die to make my own percussion caps from empty beverage cans and looked up a bunch of recipes for priming compound so that I could make that too.  The idea was that I could be immune from ammunition shortages without having to spend thousands stockpiling pallets of ammo or paying a scalper even one cent over retail, and to be self sufficient in an emergency.

I'll leave black powder making to the 'big boys' (and even they have problems once in a while)! I value my life, appendages, and facial features over fooling around with making black powder. Some do it, have gotten away so far without an incident, but there's always that chance. Twenty-one years in law enforcement showed me to many times of people fooling around with projects and endeavors they should have left alone.

You can go on U-Tube and find multitudes of video's of doing everything from A-Z, IMO doesn't make it right or safe. Always get a kick out of guys showing how to tune an engine or doing mechanical work and having no idea what they're doing. Saw one once of a guy who was going to show how to load ammo. He basically was showing how from the moment he bought his equipment, stating throughout the video he didn't know how to do this and/or that and what certain parts/tools for reloading were or how to set it up. Those guys showing the ease of making black powder make it look easy and safe, but why fool with the possibility of what can happen.

Ifin someone is going to make their own black powder it reminds me of an old story of some moron who wants to cheat death/well being by driving down a two lane highway and meeting a semi truck/trailer. As the semi approaches, the driver closes his eyes hoping to keep his vehicle in his lane and not veer into the path of the semi.
All kinds of cheers and hip-hip-horary when successful. The idiot doing so may get by with it a few times or a dozen, but sooner of later his luck will run out. Sadly true happening. A state trooper in another state advised local kids were doing so for thrills. He assisted in investigating an accident where four teens were doing so, three killed, the survivor advised of the practice. IMO same as making black powder.

In the Army, I was taught how to make IEDs and Black powder (1970s).  They told us to only do it if we had been over run and were behind Soviet lines.  The instructor said "Good" makers were missing an arm. Bad makers were dead.  I'll jeep buying my black powder. Too much can go wrong.

And I think you can find how to make a nuke on-line, too! Doesn't mean it's a good idea!

Disregard. I attempted to quote/insert an old post from 2010 I had posted regarding another thread about black powder, the making there of. For some reason when I attempted to attach file using what functions are available now at the top of the reply section, it didn't work as when I've used it before. Wanted to know the URL and size. Tried every thing I know about doing this (and that ain't much) and gave up. Didn't know that #8 post-'posted'! CC ???  :'(

Of late (last 6 - 8 months) there has been a spate of neighborhood houses being blown to smithereens.  Sometimes it's been the "soup" used to make illegal drugs.  I have also theorized it has also been some knucklehead making explosives (and finding out they actually explode).

10-4 thar' Coffinmaker. Heard 2nd hand sometime back that a couple of guys were attempting to make some of that material that sells for way to many $$$ that ya shoot at and it explodes. Something went wrong and "blew-eeee"! Severe injury and burns resulted. I've never bought or shot at that stuff, figured to pricey for the short thrill it produces. Figure if those guys have that much cash laying around it would be comparative to going down to the local store and buying 20#'s of T-Bone steaks at $16-18 a pound and driving through some area where coyotes are thick and tossing a T-bone out every 25 yards. Making yer own powder and exploding things reminds me of old stories of guys boiling the nitro-glycerin out of dynamite, didn't always have a harmonious outcome. Apologies as my fingers wouldn't quit typing.  ;D

There was a fellow named Nance, who was a member of the 12th Texas Cavalry and was severely wounded in one of the opening engagements of the civil war.  His daddy traveled from Texas to Arkansas and brought him back to recover.  His daddy did not want him to go back to his unit once he recovered and found him a job in the black powder plant in Waxahachie, Texas.  He was working there rolling powder and left the machinery and building for a bit.  Because he was absent the plant blew up along with about half of Waxahachie and 7 or 8 people were killed.  After the incident his dad decided possibly the 12th Texas might be safer.
