IIRC, in the pilot episode and some early cast stills.
which I believe this one, they were seen with An original 1875 Remington for Lorne Greene
Adam-Colt 1860 Conversion
Hoss- ivory handled 1858 Remington
Little Joe-1851 Colt Navy conversion with stag grips.

The story of Bonanza starts in 1859 Nevada.

They must have started the show as early(sic) as they did figuring it would be on for twenty to thirty years ::)

Back in the 50's/60's watching Bonanza and all of the other multitude of 'Westerns' on TV I thought things were pretty realistic. Sat glued to the tube in fascination. Now watching reruns of all of them, well I rarely do (more like never do) any more as I find it hard to watch due to the 'hokey' sets, 20th century costuming supposed to be 19th Century, off and on poor acting and scripts, improper firearms, and just plain BS.

I didn't pay much attention back at the time but has anyone ever noticed that the Cartwright's with the 100's of acres of land they had never really seemed to do any work. Those boys just seemed to hang around the house all of the time and you rarely saw them with dirty shirts and pants. Those old westerns run on several channels, an old hour long show takes forever to watch. Seems you watch 3-4 minutes of show then have to suffer through 5-6 minutes of adverts, the process repeats it self throughout the length of the show. I'll spend my time doing more constructive tasks thank you.  :P  ;D

Perceptions, conditions and opinions change with age.
You said it yourself as a kid "Sat glued to the tube in fascination."

You may note not only were as you said "you rarely saw them with dirty shirts and pants"
if fact they always wore the SAME shirts and pants (costumes) We are told, for continuity.
On rare one of the four had a torn or perhaps muddy shirt, due to some story line mishap.

Still the Bonanza, Gun Smoke et al were the Golden Era.

Today we don't see what we saw 50 or sixty years ago.

I do embrace nostalgia, antiques and fond memories...  then again
look at TOS Star Trec (loved it) and the 60's SP EFX.
 How hokey it now appears

:)  BIG BIG PLUS ONE for Major 2  ;)

Oh how our perceptions change.  Way back inna Wabac (Thank You Sherman and the Perfesser) we mostly didn't understand what we do now, of the Guns, the Clothes, the way things really were.  Sadly, I do really miss the innocence with which we sat enthralled in the moment.

Here ya there Mike, watching those old tv westerns/movies I try to drum up that old excitement I had back in the day but sadly it eludes me most of the time. I can watch them at times but notice to many glitches and 'oh brother' this and that never seen by my young eyes back in the 50's and early 60's. I'm appreciative of more recent westerns made in the last 20 years or so that even though they may be off five years on the firearms they're shooting, seem to be more realistic to how it really was (or close to it anyway).

FWIW a cousin and I had visions of making a 'Wabac' time machine as kids after watching Sherman and the Professor and reading a comic book and watching some old sci-fi tv show about time travel. We coiled a bunch of old copper and barbed wire having both a horizontal and vertical loops with two chair's sittin in the middle. Constructed a primitive control made of an old junk typewriter for typing in the year we wanted to go. Wired an old extension cord to the mess and before we could plug it in and try it, my uncle discovered the for sure fire starter/electrocution chamber and made us dismantle it. Thinking about it now the result wouldn't have been good if we had plugged it in.  :P  We had to resort back to our Flash Gordon spaceship made of old boxes for thrills.  ;D

I love seeing these original publicity photos.  Growing up in the 50s-60s I was hooked on Disney's Davy Crockett and Treasure Island as well as Gunsmoke, Bonanza and all of the Warner Bros Western series.  What a time to be growing up!
I can attribute all of this to my undying interest in History in general and especially that of this country from the founding through the 19th century.
It's interesting to see how many folks complain about how inaccurate the wardrobe, weapons and general historical timeline these movies and tv shows were.  But when you get down to it they're a big part of the reason we're on these forums today talking about the history of it all.  I agree to the term " Golden Age" to describe this time period of the Western genre.  We know more and have learned such I think because of it.

I was involved in the prop rental biz for 30+ years until retiring in 2020 and helped/ tried to educate our clients as to correct depiction of the periods they were portraying.  We do what we can because we have progressed and have different sensibilities now.

There... I've put in my two cents worth! ;D
