The Winchester Model 1873 / Re: Uberti 1873 .44-40 bore an...

Little time back I started 'slugging' the barrels of my CAS shooters for no other reason than feeding their barrels the correct diameter cast bullets. All my .44-40 marked Italian barrels mic at .429". Not an issue for the long guns but, my revolver barrels all slugged .429" with the cylinder throats coming in at .427". :o  ???
I also have some originals; rifles and revolvers marked .44-40 and they all slug out at .427". My final decision has been to load all my black and smokes-less .44-40 CAS loads with .427 cast bullets. At CAS rifle distances and the 50-60 yards at my NCOWS posse range there seems to be no problem dinging steel with my Uberti Henry, 1866 or 1873 rifles.
At one point I gave thought to reaming all the cylinder throats on my Italian revolvers to .429". Taking that .002" of steel out of 6 cylinders (36 chambers) was more work to me than just simply loading .427" bullets.  :)

Those fuzzy's come to town too. Mostly for your pets. Sightings and capture or put-downs have become somewhat common place here in the DFW metro area. Urban Wildlife. Coyotes, foxes and bobcats I've seen in my own  neighborhood here in Arlington. Down along along river beaver, the occasional gator (15'long down on Trinity Boulevard) and of course those hatefull and un-caring feral hogs that are tearing up the lawns at those Valley Ranch ($$$$$ McMansions) just this last week. Just another reason to have a Carry License while taking your wife's four legged dust mop for a walk around the block.    ;D

I hear ya and thumbs are probably good enough with cowboy loads.
I've noticed the "endshake" measurement changes from "thumbs" only to a "smack" with a machinist hammer. No need to remove the barrel unless you're cleaning .  .  .  (probably have one then)
Endshake on my acp's is less than .002", can't get that number with just thumbs.

Tee Heee Heeee

Here's the thing.  We both know Uberti barrel to arbor fit is atrocious.  But, it is uniformly atrocious.  They do utilize CNC machines to achieve a uniform error.  Therefore, after taking the burrs off the arbor, and out of the bore so there is a nice "slip" fit, when you add "stuff" as you put it to the end of the Arbor, switching/replacing barrels is super simple.

Now, Sam said "drive the wedge in and out."  OK, with what??  You don't really think Sam intended for everyone to drag tiny little hammers around with 'em so they could clean and reload their pistols??  Do Ya??  Wedges that are fit to be installed with two thumbs and removed with two thumbs are really much more practical.

Almost forgot.  I have on occasion, center bored and tapped the Arbor, but I prefer to utilize a nice Brass Machine Screw properly sized to the "cup" at the bottom of the bore.  I'd actually like to see the drill Uberti uses for that Hole to create a flat shoulder and a cup.  It's actually pretty silly to do it that way.

Haaaa!!
No, not harsh,  just the same as what you said but thuther way around.  I'm just not big on adding "stuff" to the end of the arbor.
Using tools?!!!  Well, Sam said to drive the wedge in and out. I wouldn't shoot +p's  outta any open-tops if ya couldn't!! Lol!! My wedges are still perfect as brand new!(don't need a sledgehammer to drive um in or out)

 :) Hey Hey Hey >:(

Just a mite harsh and judgmental there Mike.  There is no "Bastardizing" when one cleans up an Arbor for correct fit.  Leaving the Barrel/Arbor fit where you need tools to take them apart is sheer sloppy workmanship.  Original Colt fit was snug and smooth and one did not need to drag a hammer around to assemble nor disassemble.

It won't.
If you'll  degrease the arbor hole  and grease the arbor and let the end of the arbor hold (with grease of course) the washer,  you can "install " the "washer" without "basterdizing" 😁 the end of the arbor!! 🤣
Using the head of a Phillips head screw, the rounded part of the head will  "self center" abd give a perfect base .  .  .  Just food for thought  (THINK MAN THINK!!!!!!)

 :)  Marshall Will  ;)

Now where's the "Sport" in that??  After all we are after a "perfect" fit.  Done outside the barrel, the JB Weld/Washer combo won't be square/fit to the barrel bore.  If the recoil stress is asymmetrical, it may well crack itself loose and have to be done over.  And over.  And over.  And . . . . . .
