Title: New Pietta Frontier on the way, where can I find grips?
Post by: CatBacker88 on March 05, 2025, 11:12:03 AM
Inspired by the recent discussion on grips, I have a new Pietta Frontier inbound.  This will be a blue CCH 7-1/2" in .45 Colt.  I very much want to dress it up with grips as similar as possible to those sported by Gunsmoke's Marshall Dillon. I went through several weeks of a similar effort a year or so back searching for that sort of grips to fit a 47 year old Ruger New Model Blackhawk, which ultimately failed. Nothing from anywhere fit even close enough to "fit" them to what I thought was a very common revolver.  Perhaps this one will be easier?

There are lots of grip makers out there. Google is your friend. 2 of the more well known elk stag grip makers are Grashorn Grips and Sack Peterson.

Jack, yeah I think that's what he's looking for.

CB88, into your search engine type "jigged bone saa grips" and you will see lots like that, plus the link from Major 2 above.

I've been buying grips for several types of guns from Arizona Custom Grips and they fit very well but their stag style does not look like that.

Correct, that's why I didn't indicate I was searching for stag grips. I appreciate all the leads and I'll go from there.   Some of those leads were among those who couldn't match an unaltered Ruger NM Blackhawk.  Maybe a current production Pietta will be more successful.

Ah so! Guess I gave up too soon searching AZ Custom. If you like your grips thinner than usual (I  do) they can do that.  A little pricier than some but I  have 5 sets now of theirs.

What about these?

I agree the Arizona stag is nice but they don't look like the old Fitz jigged bone.

The look good, so worth a shot, but that's also one of the outfits who couldn't furnish grips for a New Model Blackhawk.

This set doesn't fit your New Model Blackhawk?

That is correct.  In fact, neither of two they sent me fit either of two revolvers.  One a .45 from 1976, the other a .357 from 1977.  I returned them.

XR3-RED is the grip frame on both guns.

I'm going with the NC Ordnance grips, hoping for no issues.  If all goes well, I'll revisit the Ruger situation. The gun arrived yesterday, and if anyone is in the market for a nice single action .45, I would certainly endorse the Cimarron Frontier.  This is my second one, the first being two years ago.  It was a 5.5", and although cosmetically there wasn't anything to really object to, it was only about average for looks.  Unfortunately it had some serious timing issues and had to "go back" to Texas for adjustment.  This 7.5" version has much better case coloring and it seems perfectly timed. Also, I was really pleased to notice Pietta seems to have read my mind and started finishing their hammer spurs with the nice knurling Uberti's used for years instead of just a basic serration pattern. Looks real nice.

I've used NC Ordnance grips several times for obsolete or antique grips.
 I had good experiences.
I can tell you the proprietor (at lease the Gent awhile back) can be cantankerous, there are tales told, of good days & bad  ;)

It's humorous you mention that.  I remember such a conversation with a cantankerous gentlemen during my failed attempt to use their grips on my Blackhawks.

In case anyone cares  ;)  my NC Ordnance grips arrived and they do fit reasonably well.  Not perfectly, of course, but a bit of fitting will get them looking just fine.  I'll give those guys credit, they do ship quick!

I'll be happy to oblige, right after (1) I figure out how to post pictures and (2) I get my cylinder back from the gunsmith who is fitting the cylinder bushing for me.  It was WAY too hard to pound it it out and of course it should be a snug slip fit so, I think it's best to let him do it.

Well, between your help and my wife's PC, we got it done.  I'm using a Chromebook, and it's not always obvious why things seem impossible.  :)

It should be just fine.  I also have one I purchased two years ago, identical except a 5 1/2" barrel.  It's a dandy, too.  I would definitely recommend the Cimarron "Frontier" to anyone looking for a very nice looking well made reproduction of a Second Generation Colt.
