Title: CCW What to you like to carry?
Post by: Major 2 on August 09, 2024, 08:36:50 AM
Over the years I've packed a few different pieces...S&W Mod. 36 J frame Revolver, Beretta 950s, Sig 365
Even a Armi-Galesi-Brevetto in 25cal.
I prefer pocket carry, none of the IWB are anyway comfortable for me, nor is ankle carry.
OWB is OK for camping or hiking, but I find I'm doing that way less and less anymore  :(
not to mention Florida is not an open carry state (except Hunting, Camping or Fishing) No mention of hiking legality either.

So, I now pocket carry the S&W 642, (the Mod. 36 before that) the Taurus is carried in my road Hazzard kit.
The Springfield EMP is carried in a Flap Holster (IF) in the wood's duty and the 642 still in my pocket.

:) Hy ya Maj 2  ;)

Personally, I'm what I consider to be "Old School."  I prefer to carry in a traditional Holster OWB and my preferred (only) carry is a Commander 1911 platform.

I do admit though, I have an Itch for a Springfield EMP, were if it were only offered as a .45.

I also qualify as old school, carrying a revolver.
I went with a SIG 365 for a while, but it had a flaw, had penchant to shear firing pins. (twice)
So, I got it repaired and consigned it.
I purchased the S&W 642 (lighter and DA only)

The EMP is in 9MM and I looked at a new Rock Island Officer in 45 Cal.
But the EMP was on consignment in 2020 at my friends LGS and the OP accepted my offer.
So, it came home.
I have full size 1911's, but I have not CCW any of them.

My always gun is a Kahr CT 380 in pocket carry. If IWB a Sig P239 in .40, when OWB either a Sig 229 in .40 or a S&W Scandium Commander in .45ACP.

For the last couple of years my choice is the Glock 48 or Ruger LCR. If I can't conceal my OWB, I carry the Glock in a belly band and the LCR in my pocket.

A couple of Keltecs, a P32 32acp in ankle or pocket holster.  And a P11 9mm usually IWB with the belt clip. Both have had the slides hard chromed. I've thought about upgrading the .32 to a Keltec or Ruger .380 because they are about the same size.  I got the P32 when they first came out, long before the .380's got small.  More recently I've started carrying a Glock 19 inherited from a brother.  That is in a leather holster on the hip, when I wear an open Hawaiian shirt over a tank top.  Or under a jacket, but that doesn't happen much in Texas.  I will open carry only when I'm walking late at night in the neighborhood.  I'm wearing a flashing red light on my cap, too, so people will know I want to be seen and am not up to mischief  :) .  We can open carry here, but I don't in public.  Oh, and occasionally my 44 Special Thunderer when I'm walking at night.

Sweet ! when was it made?

Mine was 1919 chambered in 38 (S&W),
it was the duty side arm of  Bill Stackhouse of the Cincinatti Motor patrol.
Photo taken in 1932 with his Indian, note the Colt and holster.

"Sweet ! when was it made? "

According to the S/N it lists 1913 on the research data.  I have run it more than once just to be sure.  Old thing is still tight as can be and for its age isn't a bad looking revolver.  Not my only Colt but maybe my favorite!!   ;D

I pocket carry a J frame or a Colt Mustang. Both are lightweights. Currently using the Mustang. My open carry would be a 1911 or 625 Smith.

There is Law suit filed against the State by some group... challenging Florida Law banning open carry.
Which is strange because Florida is called the Gun Shine State.
Gov. Desantis signed in to law last year, allowing permit-less conceal carry.
In Florida you can still get a permit or not and legally carry concealed.
You can open carry IF you are Hunting, Fishing or Camping.
There some dude on U-tube pushing that on video...
He open carries a Glock OWB and an AR style rifle across his chest...and he has a fishing pole the videos are baiting for reactions and cop encounters... ::)

Personally, I doubt I'd ever want to open carry advertising myself

I think that they should have to either have a fish on the line, the baited line in fishable waters [ie a canal, lake or ocean, not a sewer] or be in a boat on those fishable waters [not a sewer] for that law to apply but then I'm not a nutzy Florida lawmaker. What do I know?

The laws allow for open carry to and from Camping Fishing & Hunting.
Florida Statute 790.25 (h)
 A person engaged in fishing, camping, or lawful hunting or going to or returning from a fishing, camping, or lawful hunting expedition;

That wording really stretches the intent. for example, what if I'm just hunting for a place to camp & fish  ???

  https://www.tallahassee.com/story/news/2024/08/07/florida-open-carry-ban-challenged-in-court-by-2nd-amendment-groups/74703126007/

It's really moot though, the baddies are armed to the teeth, and care zip for the law....

Course we have Grady Judd (near by Polk Co.) and a few of other likeminded Sheriff's

Spent this last weekend in Texas at a game convention. Just had my faithful Kahr CT380 in my front pocket, it was invisible, and I didn't upset anyone.

I've cycled through a few the past couple years. Started the journey with a Commander 1911, then migrated to a Glock 27, then Glock 43. Then I went to a KelTec P32, then an Original Charter Undercover 38(with hammer). Then a Ruger Max-9, a 9mm 1911 Officer, S&W 686, and back to the Charter.

I'm thinking the next one will be a DA/SA autoloader of some flavor.

Excellent choices Slim.
Several Lustrum ago I consulted with numerous Chicago & Minneapolis and Denver LEO and plaincothes detectives. Based on their real world experiences and the Downtown ER Doctor reports,  I have settled on and advise the use of glaser safety slugs in enclosed spaces. The efficacy is literally shocking, and overpenetration and collateral damage is virtually nonexistant.

One Leo used .45 acp first 4 glasers, followed by supervel flying ashtrays ( no longer made)

For about the last 8 years I have been carrying a 642 S&W.  I went back to a revolver when I was having a series of shoulder surgery's.  The revolver was the easiest to load and shoot one handed, and with my off hand.
I also found that those thick padded slings are a great place to carry.
The 642 is so easy to carry, it stays on me all day every day.  When I was carrying a full size gun, I could not wait to get it off me as soon as I was home.  DR

I'm not all that about .380, I've had a few, but currently nothing so chambered.

Many years ago (30 +), I had an Arcadia Machine and Tool Backup 380 (AMT DA Backup)
These were Stainless Steel semi autos (in the Seacamp size range) pocket 380's.
They were snappy, and not all that, I traded it off never sorry.
Probably, somewhere around then I acquired a Romanian PPK .380 clone.
Shotgun News posted a deal, Buy @ $129 or buy 3 at $105.ea.
So, 3 of us pooled and we ordered 3 of them.
Fit & Finish was cob like, but it did function.
Like the AMT, the broad side of a barn was reasonably safe.

My Pard had a Beretta Mod. 1934, and I have a M1935 both are WW2 bring backs.
I fell for the charms of the 32acp. and have collected several though I never carry them concealed. Several have provenance in WW1 or WW2 service.

Taurus up'ed their game several years ago. I had purchased a Model 85 38 spcl. revolver
as road hazard toolbox gun for my wife's SUV. some years ago.
It was after Bangor Punta holding company dual ownership of both S&W & Taurus.
The 85 is and has been trouble free.
Then earlier this year, I took a Taurus 605 Poly Protector in a partial trade.

I figured it for trading fodder down the road a bit... however, I have decided it will be the road hazard toolbox gun in my SUV. Though it is a .357 Mag, it's some snappy with magnums so its diet is
38 Wadcutters, and it shoots very well.
I sill pocket carry a Smith 642, but the Taurus is a neat lite gun and @ 1/2 the price of the Ruger LCR.
Perfect in Stainless/Poly so rust is not an issue.
I opted to retain the longer grips, but it does come with a shorter CCW grip included.
CCW was not my planned carry for this revolver.

How about a more period correct 5-shooter. This is my S&W New Departure 2" top break along with a much more newly made Tom Three Persons holster by El Paso Saddlery that also fits my Chief Special square butt Model 36; no dash. I used the 'bicycle pistol' as my main match pistol at this past Saturday NCOWS match. No misses, all double action, all the time.

Neat, JB and right up my wheelhouse small easy concealed revolver.

I had two 38 S&W's, one a lemon squeezer, with 3" barrel but I traded it off.
Actively, looking a Colt Police Positive donor for a Fitz Special redo, just cause  :P

Mike, I did not think I'd ever want a Poly gun.
I won a Glock at a Shoot's door prize.
It was my choice which model I'd receive, I chose a Mod.17.
Fine gun, but it was a no brainer to trade "even steven"
for NIB Stringfield 1911.
Nexted, I bought a SIG 365, but after it Sheared a Fring Pin, It went back to the Mother Ship for warranty repair. When it "Sheared a FP again
I had it repaired again at a SIG authorized dealer somewhat local (within easy driving distance) on my dime (part was free though)
I consigned it and down the road it went.

So, that brings in the Poly Protecter in partial trade.
I figured I'd consign it and Reep the cash . But it is solid little pistol
Actually, it's a Stainless-Steel frame, and SS Cylinder and barrel incased in a poly housing.
I then watched Utube comparison reviews, of the Poly revolvers Taurius, Ruger and S&W

The only thing Ruger had over the Taurus was trigger feel, at $300 more MSRP.
I am very fond of my Smith 342 but I not all that about the S&W Poly Bodyguard revolver.
So, I have opted keep the Taurus as a Bug out, road hazard piece.
At least for foreseeable future.
I am fickle, and it could be traded someday  :-\

I agree,  the 85's (first one was blued) have been great little guns. Back in the late 80's I got one of their Mod. 66's in .357 and it was a most excellent revolver!! That may have been one of the best they ever made! Wish I still had it  .  .  .

It to be bobbed to 2" "FITZ Special" so it doesn't matter.
However, I won't butcher a good shooter just because I want a project.

Why a FITZ Special ? ...just cause it's cool and unique and from a time in Mid 20's early 1930 history.

FITZ Specials were ether 1917's or Police Positives, only maybe a 100 total were ever made.
Cops and Mobsters both had them.
A real FITZ is pricy, and hard to come by.
There quite a few replicas, I've even seen S&W get the treatment.

Photo is not mine, but it's a bucket list project

I have been drooling over that same gun here locally for a while. I'm having a hard time deciding between that and a new Colt Python 3 inch.

That said my normal carry is a GEN 5 Glock 19. I'm certainly not adverse to carrying a sixgun and have and do on occasion. Usually in an urban setting it's the Glock but anytime out away from town the revolver gets the time on my hip. Lately it's been my Ruger 8 shot.357 mag RedHawk. That one does take a sturdy leather belt, but it wears just fine.

I recall, Kevin it was one of the prods to do one for me.

I think they are uber cool perhaps not in 2000's safety wise thinking.
I want a COLT donor, considered a Smith Mod 10 that one of the importers were handling.
(Singapore Police Buy Backs) they were $195. but I decided eh! I was a COLT.
John Fitzgerald only did COLTS.

I do own both a Colt Commando w/ Letter & WW2 service, and a Police Positive with Police provenance.
Neither are donor guns as both are in great Condition.

One thing the Colt's have over S&Ws for this kind of conversion is the hump that has to be left on the S&W trigger area during cut off whereas the Colt can be smoothed straight across. Looks cleaner in my opinion.
