Title: Holster Leather thickness
Post by: Gunleather on April 04, 2023, 01:23:28 AM
Just curious what thickness do y'all use for your holsters?

For SASS western style I use 10-12 or if I can't find that I've used as thick as 13-15. The reason I use such thick leather is that I had clients complain that the 8-9 would start to collapse after a year or two when reholstering thus costing valuable time during a stage. I don't line any of my holsters.

For all other holsters such as Wild Bunch or concealed carry where reholstering is not a concern I use 8-9.

8-9 usually. Never had any collaps yet. What kind of leather are you using?

I have even used some in the 7-8 range but usually try to keep them around 8-9. I have lined up to a 9-10 sometimes but thats about as high as I have went so far.

I also use 8-9 oz on holsters for the most part. They are easy toi wet mold and retain the shape unless you over-oil them. And, like Rube mentioned, do occasionally have used thinner leather like 7-8 oz for smaller pistols.

I did make a pair from two layers of 8-9 oz leather one time. They were a bear to wet mold but when done, you could drive a truck over them and not hurt them. ;D

When we get enough response to this thread, I'll add it to our FAQ list for easy location in the future.
