Howdy Santee,
Many thanks for posting "Cigars in the Old West". In the 1920's and 1930's my grandfather owned a cigar factory in Milwaukee. He lost it during the depression. I was too young to remember his factory but I do remember him. He passed away in 1945.

Yes, it was. He was cowboy through & through. Polite, no cussin', kinda humble. He showed me old B&W pics no white man outside of his family ever saw. Including his grandfather and his friends and old relatives. Now that was cool. His grandad sure liked to have gatherings at his house and hold court in the backyard.

I wanted to like Hell on Wheels ...I just could not get past the absolute ignorance of both the Armor & Prop master.
Bad enough, the hero gun was a obvious "gun that never was " in the form of a brass frame 1860 Army
In the showing of "Making of Hell on Wheels' aired video both the Armor & Prop master made so many falsehoods , and down right BS ignorant mistakes to prove they did not know anything regarding the gun(s)
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tG9uJmAt9IE
It is one thing to be ignorant ( one can learn ) ..it is totally different when you open your mouth , and show the ignorance and be recorded for posterity on a video
Sometimes those things make it hard to watch a show. With me, the hats are a challenge. But if everything else is interesting I can overlook it.
Here ya go!

Agree. The everyday life in the Old West isn't covered a great deal and the things done to make life easier has largely been forgotten.
For example, The reloading of cartridges to use for hunting or defense, personal items, bedrolls like Santee covered, how a person packed a horse with so many supplies for traveling, carrying water in bags, ETC...
One of my relatives way back in early 1980's showed me a hot water bath tub with heater that she said was made in early 1880's. Wood or coal fired

Nice presentation, always enjoy seeing bison. Interestingly (to me) they are working on bringing back the European bison, closely related to the North American one, and they are using some North American stock to "beef" up the blood line. Will be interesting to see them running around eastern Europe.
Mogorilla, I read that like 90% of the American Bison have cattle DNA. So, very few have not been "fraternizing" with the bovines!!

Thanks Santee,
You might see from my avitar, that I owned an 1862 Gatling Gun. (sold it a few years ago)
It was a six barreled percussion gun, using pistol primers for ignition in a barrel "sleeve" (aka. cartridge) loaded with loose powder and a round ball, much like a percussion revolver cylinder..
Gen. Burnside bought 12 Gatling out of his own pocket at $1k each. these were set up outside the Richmond, VA. but never used in combat. The USN also bought 3 guns . I have seen period photos a USN Monitor on the deck.
My best ,
Blair

I am expectorating a lot of comments on this one. (-:
When I was a kid, my grandfather was a realtor. His wife didn't allow smoking in the home so in his home office, he had a small brass spitoon in his lower desk drawer. He'd open the drawer and use it, then close the drawer again. Of course, the drawer still has serious dark stains in it today, evidence that his aim wasn't always perfect.
My Father used to sell cigars and cigarettes to the taverns in Milwaukee. I used to help him with deliveries during the late 1940's and early 1950's. I remember the bars beng lined with brass spittoons. I learned very quickly to avoid looking into them.
My heartfelt thanks go to Santee for sharing these wonderful videos with us. They are interesting, informative and fun to watch.

Thanks for another good episode. Those 1st generation Colts are mighty nice. You mentioned it had a heavy hammer spring. Evidently it wasn't uncommon a practice back then to put a piece of leather under the hammer spring at the screw to lighten it.

Very interesting and informative. This brought back memories for me. I was stationed at Fort Sill, Oklahoma in 1959 for Artillery training. I vaguely remember seeing Geronimo's gravesite. Many thanks for posting.
I got to land at a dirt airstrip alongside a rancher's home, which used to be Fort Rock, AZ. It was a few miles South of Hwy 40, maybe a half hour West of Seligman. It was constructed of the local red rock set in a high desert valley near a small natural lake. Low rock cliffs overlooked it. What a beautiful spot. It's not a place the general public will ever see. I will always remember it.
While shooting "Alamo the Price of Freedom" I was quartered at Ft. Clark. Brackettville Tx.
My actual apartment was the restored Officer quarters for Capt.'s & Majors.
The parade ground was directly out my front door.
The famous spring fed huge swimming pool was just 100 yards to the left.

Great stuff, Santee. And is related to something I've been wondering. Have you ever done an episode on what it takes, besides the research, to technically produce these videos? Thats was good one Santee, as a Film Production Designer, it was constant struggle for weeding out anachronisms and continuity mistakes.
It was not perfect though, in "Houston the Legend of Texas " a reenactor's wristwatch got by.
Another in " Gettysburg", even after the Background artists were instructed to remove any such tell tales.
A biplane pulling a banner almost made a take, requiring a reshoot the same scene a few days later.
I think the most blaring error was in Tombstone, when Morgan is killed, Wyatt goes outside in the rain and the ground is wet in only a 30 foot circle. makes me laugh every time
The most annoying, repeated error for me was constantly committed by the Duke himself. His ever present Model 1892 Winchester saddle ring carbine, no matter the year of the movie's setting makes me grind my teeth every time. His 4-3/4" Single Action Army Colt, which wasn't available until about 1878, is also prevalent in many of his movies set in an earlier time frame. It's the curse of a gun fancier and history buff to know too much. (smile)

My biggest pet peeve, screaming pet peeve...was (is) Hell on Wheels
a "brass frame 1860 never was" cast as a Griswold & Gunnison ::)
The Armor was so stupid, stated it was Griswold ,
I quit watching the series.
bad enough, Brass frame 1858 Remington's in "Ride with the Devil" and Hatfield & MaCoy's.
WE even tried to tell them on "Ride", but Director Ang Lee liked the brass look

Teddy Roosevelt is one of my most admired Presidents.
In his last years, still the adventurer he fished the 10,000 islands on the west coast of Florida.
He stayed and my Grandfathers Seminole Hotel in Ponta Gorda.
This photo was taken on one of the stays, the Jordan Auto he is in was my grandfather's.
Here as Roosevelt arrived, my grandfather and grandmother are standing near the post at the hotel entrance.
A terrific photo! Thanks for sharing it.

I never forgotten the experience
It was and still is a is a family owned and operated Western themed RR between Boone and Blowing Rock, North Carolina.

When a kid (yea, I was young oncest). One of my favorite memories was riding The Calico Railroad at Knotts Berry Farm in California. A replica of the Denver and Rio Grand Railroad.
